Post subject: What's everyone playing now?
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>games>rpg (more info?)

It's been a couple months, and I've hit a dead stop in my post xmas
game playing, so stopping by for updates. Anything new and amazing
I've missed?

As I'd mentionioned I'd played portal, and it was short and marginally
fun, with the major redeeming quality of 'the computer' it was o.k. -
Reccomendation just for that. Also unfortunately best of the bunch of
games I've played post xmas

I played Halflife 2, which was o.k. It reminded me more of recent war
themed FPSs than it did of the original half life. and it was o.k. -
Wouldn't recommend it, but didn't walk away in disgust so o.k. as a
time waster. Also played episode 1, unbelievably short and pointless,
wouldn't buy it if it were $1.

Darkstar One - Space Sim. reminded me a bit of elite, but just a
bit. Space combat was pretty good, but gets repetative near the end.
Didn't really like the ship or upgrade path you are given. It says on
the package it's open ended and all that, but you have to follow the
story line to get ship upgrades, so it's pretty much on rails with
just a bit doing whatever you want to earn money between story
missions. Slightly bad voice acting, but tolerable. - Not
recommended, but it's o.k. if you are desperate for a space sim, which
I was. It's also sadly the 2nd best of the games I've played post
xmas.

Ratchet Deadlocked. Most of you don't care about the console stuff,
so just skip this paragraph. Not much to say here, it's Ratchet minus
all the platform stuff of the previous ratchet and clanks. It's about
as fun as the previous ones, but considerably easier, played it
through 2ce. I'd give this one another "Eh.".

Disciples Gold II. Turn Based Strategy - similar to Heroes of Might
and Magic. Made it through the tutorial, and the first scenario, then
got decimated in the second. The game is slow and seems to have
little point to anything you do or choose. Can't really see any other
way I could have played it. Stopped in disgust. Recommended to avoid
this one.

X2 - just started this one, but quit. I think my space sim cravings
were satisfied by Darkstar One for a bit, so looking to try something
else. No review yet. Or perhaps I'm just burnt out from so many
games in rapid succession.

Frankly going back to Diablo 2, which is what I did before any of
these games, was better than any of these games. I didn't even like
Diablo 2 the first time. I'm tempted to try PS:T again as I didn't
like that the first time either. Or Morrowind. But then I'm pretty
sure I still wouldn't like Morrowind, not so much PS:T

I've still got Divine Divinity and Galactic Civilizations to try from
my xmas binge. And team fortress 2, since I bought the orange box
(and HL2-episode 2 but I'm not going there), but I'm starting to loose
hope anything will be any good.

I just finished Gothic 3 again and am now finally playing U5Lazarus. It's
quite fun so far. Right now I'm trying to go around to all the cities and
explore. I've visited the shrines of Justice and Compassion and am on my
way towards Minoc next.

Divine Divinity was cool. At first blush it looks like a
diablo clone, but it had much more actual RPG in it than diablo. Not
as much replayability though, but worth playin' once I thought.

Beyond Divinity, the sequal to the above, was buggy w/the
theivery path so I never played it because I kept waiting for them to
fix that in a patch and they never did (perhaps they have by now or
perhaps there's a fan patch).

To answer your question though, what I'm playing now:

M2TW + expansion and sins of a solar empire. (both are
weekend only though, take a lot of time). I guess I'm in an RTS kick,
for weekends at least.

Galciv2 + expansion, but not so much lately because I don't
wanna be burnt out when the new expansion which is nearing release
comes out. Twilight of the Arnor. But I'll be playing a lot more
when it does finally show its head.

Puzzle Quest - my lunch hour at work game (I have it on psp,
but its out for pc. has a free demo). I only allow myself to play it
at work so that I don't just whip through it and finish it in no time,
to no longer have anything interesting to play in teh half hour left
of my lunch hour after I eat.

UT3 - my game for when I want to shoot someone in the face.
=>

Titan Quest + expansion - my game for when its late night
after work and I can't get to sleep, but I'm too tired to play a game
that requires thinking or that requires too great a chunk of time.

I have some pbem games goin' for aow1 and aow2, but that takes
a few minutes, then I've played my turn and sent it off. Don't do
more than one turn a day.

Occasionally play Birth of America, if I want more TBS, until
the above GC2 expansion comes out.

Lastly, I have an ongoing game of oblivion that I
occasionally, like once a month, go back to for one sitting, only to
leave it alone for another month. I enjoyed morrowind a lot more,
that was hard for me to put down, oblivion is very easy for me to put
down.

Funny enough I went back to the cupboard and got out Never Winter Nights
Diamond and I'm enjoying it all over again. That will keep me busy until
about 2009 Smile

Plus I'm still trying to get FF8 to run on my PC.

The whole HL franchise has never really done it for me. It just felt
like a prettier version of Doom without the atmosphere. I got less than
halfway through HL1 before giving up in frustration, and spent mere
minutes looking at HL2 and Ep1 before deciding not to investigate
further. I actually own HL1 and am resolved to finish it one day, after
I understand why FPSs are more fun than RPGs or strategy games.

Sad to hear this - this is quite near the top of my pile waiting to
play, and I had high hopes. Had a blast of Freelancer over xmas, because
my bro' claimed that no space-sim has come as close to Elite since FL,
and I fear he was right. FL is very limited (static prices, repetitive
missions) but still probably the best. I downloaded the freeware
Descent:Freespace remake, but haven't tried it yet. Also hear there's a
Privateer remake which is supposed to be really good. Will check them
out in my next space-sim phase.

Hmm. I *love* this kind of TB strategy/rpg hybrid - reminds me of
nothing so much as Warlords III:DLR. I have both Sacred Lands and the
Disciples II collector's edition waiting to play - again, right near the
top of the pile. I've had the latter for a couple of years but have a
quirk about playing games in chronological order, so have been waiting
until I got a copy of Sacred Lands Gold, which I only did a few months ago.

Hmmm, never tried the X series, but another one to check out next time I
do space-sims.

I liked Morrowind about as much as I liked Halflife. I've never even
tried Oblivion because of that. Yet I liked Arena and Daggerfall just
fine. Weird.

I still play D2 every now and then, but only for item-hunting. I've
decided I want to collect every single item the game can possibly drop.
I've got all the whites, most of the sets and uniques, but it's amazing
how many permutations of sockets there are. (Fortunately I don't have a
list of possible blue and yellow items, so I can't collect those.)

I also have Divine Divinity waiting to try, supposed to be like D2 only
better (which is very encouraging). I was very disappointed with the
original Gal Civ - completed only one game I think, and played only a
few more. I never really understood why, since 4X-in-space is my
favourite genre, but it just left me cold. I never tried GC2.

So, as far as what I have actually been playing, since Freelancer at xmas:

Hellgate:London - got this for xmas and played it intensely for about
three weeks, but got to a point where I was totally stuck (trying to
kill the zeppelin) and couldn't find a way round. Odd that it's so
linear. It even sent me right back to the same impossible situation
every time I reloaded. Put it aside until I feel like starting over, and
read up on a solution to that level.

BG2/ToB - picked up a game that's been suspended for over a year, right
at the end of Watcher's Keep. Still a lot of fun.

Crawl Stone Soup - tried out a new roguelike and really liking it.

Barkley Comedy Retro Basketball RPG - fun for a couple of hours.

Sword Of The Stars - *very* nice space 4X, vastly better than GalCiv.
Still not quite perfect.

But all this is history, because yesterday I got a Wii for my birthday ....

It's a hybrid rpg/tbs game. If you miss the rpg aspect, you'll get your arse
handed to you in a string bag. You have to more or less completely explore the
whole level, and make sure all the really good goodies go to your main hero,
_especially the permanent stat boosting ones_, as well as the lion share of
battle experience. You're taking that hero into the next stage of the campaign.
There are different ways you can develop your hero: slugger, leader, speedfreak
.... I loved the game and played through all the campaigns.

Or maybe it's just not for you Razz

X3 is MUCH better, i.m.o. I choked on X2, badly, and I love X3, even if I
haven't played it for nearly a year. But I expect I will dust it off once I get
over my Anarchy Online addiction.

And that answers what I am playing a.t.m.: AOnline. As well as Galciv2 and
Wesnoth and of course there's the boardgaming group ...

I was probably a little harsh on it. It's not really that bad. Give
it a try, you might like it, especially as you already have it. I at
least finished it, which is a lot more than most of these types of
games. I got it for $8 at Target, and I'd say it's worth that anyway,
I'd say up to 2ce that... As compared to all the other games I got
recently it's one of the best, so if grading on that scale it's about
an 8 Wink unfortunately if you compare it to Wing Commander III then
it's about a 4 (WCIII being a 10)

I loved Warlords (don't remember which #), and as compared to Heroes
of Might and Magic (whichever version I played, and I don't remember)
HoMM was far better. Both have been a long time though, who knows
which I would like now. This one is down at the bottom of the list of
those types of games though.

Yeah, I'm the same there, loved Daggerfall. Morrowind was a big
disappointment. Oblivion fell somwhere inbetween the two for me. You
might be o.k. with it, but there's plenty else out there to try.

I've figured out several reasons I originally didn't like D2, and one
of those is I had been playing EQ around the time, and had an ass-full
of trying to collect stuff. I'm much more interested in the character
development.

I probably shouldn't have picked up Gal Civ, but it was only $8. I
had played the demo ages ago and didn't get into it. (same with Gal
Civ 2). But we all know how poorly demos can reflect the real thing,
so I thought I'd give it a chance.

I really need to get that.

That looked like it would have been fun, if only I had the slightest
idea of what they were talking about. I don't follow sports at all,
so it was all just nonsense to me, falling on def ears.

Well I loved moo, and moo II even more. These games were best playing
with friends though, and that just doesn't happen any more Sad

I loved mom best of all though. I don't know if the games aren't good
any more, or if I've just lost whatever it is that makes these
interesting.

And Moo III is sitting in a drawer rotting, I tried playing it, but
after an hour or two of going WTF?!?! every couple minutes I gave up.

> But all this is history, because yesterday I got a Wii for my birthday ....

Congratulations! I'd like to get one, but it looks like it would be
most fun with friends, and my best ones just dropped off the face of
the earth a year and a half ago. My wife *might* play some of the
stuff with me, but it's unlikely.

Could be. I did get the RPG aspect, it was just in the second
scenario there was nothing I could see I could have done better, the
computer just showed up with some level 4 guys and decimated my level
3 guys, which is the highest the scenario would let me upgrade to.

I hate to go read a walkthrough, and that would be the only way I
could do it at this point. Perhaps if I started over and cleared
everything in the first scenario with my hero. I might try this again
now that I'm thinking about it. The game was just sooo sloooow though
too. I'll probably go through my other games first though.

Was there an X?

People still play Anarchy Online? It's been a long time, how's it
going there? It got boring for me pretty fast when I was playing it.

I saw that one, but I think it requires the expansion which I don't
have. I should really pick up the expansion. I hate buying stuff
online (instant gratification and all that), and finding it local
would be a miracle.

I read up on SoaSE, it looks interesting. However both it and the
witcher are too advanced for my poor aging win2k box. *sigh* I might
have to upgrade to xp some day, but I can still find a lot of 2k
playable games that I want to try.

Happy birthday for yesterday! But don't think the Wii is going to drag
you away from PC gaming. I was all for buying one until I played a
friends for some time over Xmas - great in small doses I found. Fun
when you have friends around. Not enough there for a single player in
comparison to the PC. I think you'll use it less than the PC (unless
you share a flat with a bunch of Mario-mad friends of course) Wink

The important possibility about the Wii is that it might help turn my
wife into a gamer. When we first met (about 5 years ago) she feigned an
interest in D2 for a few months, but that's the only game I've ever
managed to get her to play, and it didn't last. A year or two later I
got her to tell me what she wanted from a game, and what she wanted
seemed to look a lot like SMAC, so I got her to try that. But it was way
too complicated and, I later discovered, had too many numbers - she
*really* doesn't like numbers, and it's amazing how many games that
rules out. Then I tried her on The Sims, and was gutted when she became
one of the only women in the universe not to enjoy it (I exaggerate, but
that was how the disappointment seemed). She enjoys Eurorails the board
game, but again wasn't interested in railway-building PC games. She just
doesn't like sitting at a PC at home - even side-by-side with me. Too
much like work I guess.

Now, we've only had the Wii for half a day, but because it involves
sitting in front of the TV (which she likes doing a lot), it's much
easier to get her to play something. So we're off to buy a second
controller, and something other than Wii Sports!

I suspect you're right that for my solo gaming I will stick to a PC (not
least because I won't be allowed to hog the TV). But for family gaming,
it's already looking like a better solution.

Cheers,

CC

Everything you said here is good advice in Heroes of Might & Magic as
well. These two games must really be similar.

This I can understand. I have a wife who wont even feign interest. She
bought me a gaming-related present for Xmas (a 512MB GTS) and I nearly
dropped through the floor. Both for the fact that she'd bought me
something for me to continue 'wasting my time with' and that she bought
exactly the right card - though this was probably just down to luck -
there was equal chance I could have got a Radeon 2400 Pro!

Trouble is that while a group of us had a laugh on the Wii at Xmas she
sat there looking at us like we're mad. I've accepted that we're
compatible in other areas... Wink
