I guess I'm in the position of a lot of GTA fans right now... I'd like
to share in the LCS/VCS experience but I'm put off by the idea of
playing on a tiny screen (not to mention buying an entire device just
to play 2 games).

Let me expand a little... I play GTA3/VC/SA on the PC sitting about a
foot in front of a 19" screen and when I'm playing I'm right THERE,
inside Liberty, or Vice City or San Andreas. The experience is totally
immersive, especially if the room is dark and I'm wearing headphones.
This is so much a part of these games for me - the whole VR thing. I'm
actually surprised what a good job it does.

I've never seen a PSP let alone played on one - but I am sceptical that
I can get the same immersive feeling from looking at a tiny screen like
that. So I ask - what do the users out there think? Especially those
who weren't already PSP/game boy etc users? Is it just a toy to while
away train journeys or does it measure up - at all - to playing on a
big screen?

[btw I'm assuming here that these little devices don't have the ability
to display on a big monitor... if they do please tell me!]

TWJ

PS. In case I am straying near to trolling or console vs. PC flamewars
territory here... please be aware this is not my intention!!

I only play GTA on my PSP, and while it's not as immersive as The Real
Thing, it's still quite okay. I only notice this if I play GTA on the
big screen on my computer after playing GTA on the PSP. Once you're back
on the PSP I quickly 'forget'.

The controls are something else, though I personally did get used to
them quite well. Others reported that they find them more difficult to
handle. I mostly miss R2 & L2, which makes drive-by shooting more
difficult.

There actually is. There's a device that you click onto the screen,
which then actually scans the display and outputs it to a tv. Didn't try
that, since I like playing with the PSP lounging in a chair in a corner
of the room, rather than sitting in front of a large tv or computer.

The screen isn't the problem on the PSP, although its slow response
time doesn't help, things get a bit blurry. The controls are the
problem compared to the PC, even for console controls it isn't great
on the PSP, but if you are used to keyboard and mouse, you will feel
like you are playing with one hand tied behind your back.

It is a playable game on the PSP, and has its fun moments, but you are
playing despite the controls, not with them.

You'd be surprised how quickly you get used to playing on the PSP. The
controls are not as good as the PS2 but then you wouldn't realistically
expect them to be.
The screen size is another thing you get used to. I enjoy nothing more than
playing Vice City on a 42" plasma screen with speakers all over the room but
even then i can go to the PSP and after 10 minutes i hardly notice how small
it is. Plus i've got about 10 episodes of the Simpsons on there for when I
get bored at work (being a civil servant it happens quite easily), so you
can while away train journeys but it is first and foremost a decent gaming
device.
I'm happy with mine anyway.
That's when I can get the bastard off me missus like!

controls are not as good as the PS2 but then you wouldn't realistically
expect them to be.

You'd be surprised how quickly you get used to playing on the PSP. The

expect them to be.
