I think you have to use glquake or winquake, but I haven't tried either
of them. They are free downloads. I think they are small, because
they don't contain the graphics.

For online play, you need a quakeworld client, I think fuhquake is
popular, and it's free, too.

now is when we say "WinQuake". I can't get Quake.exe, glquake.exe,
qw.exe, qwgl.exe to work in XP Pro SP2. SO, I can run it, and in
highest res, but it isn't very pretty. It is fast tho!

Usually the only problem with getting glquake to run is that you need to
delete the opengl.dll that comes in the Quake directory. Since when glquake
was written the 3dfx Voodoo Graphics card was the main target, they put a
3dfx-specific opengl file there for the game to use. The game looks there
first, then that driver doesn't work with your modern graphics card.

Don't know why qwcl wouldn't work, though. I never had any trouble getting
it working in XP.

I finally realized the problem was the opengl32.dll that is installed by
default by XP SP2 and GLQuake. I deleted that, and for good measure
copied my nvidia version over to the Quake folder. All things GL Quake
work great. I don't know why qwcl wouldn't work before, it is working
now.
All of it is working now, and in GL.
For brightness probs, I just set a preset for it in the nvidia Color
Controls and click that before launching the game. No problems so far.
Oh, no compatibility mode is used either.

There some things to do, use glquake.exe, find your primary open gl dll
and place it in the top root folder of "quake", mine is > nvoglnt.dll <
whatever it is, it is the part of the driver for your vid-card. It has to be
copied, do not cut it.

You could also find GLQuake 1.13 online, download and install it, that
makes Quake I into version 1.13, really awesome. Also make an empty
autoexec.cfg and place it in the ID1 folder, it adds features and can be
filled with commands that Quake will obey. If it is simply added to the
folder, even if empty, you can set the mouse wheel button as the back-
peddler, mouse 3, which is great for me in game-play.

Everything mentioned above also applies for quake II, though the folder
layout is different for where everything goes. You can follow it.
