Ok, I played Thief 1 and really enjoyed it although it was rather
hard. I had to do lots of reloading because of my tendency to blunder
around a lot. Also, I tended to not use my arsenal because it was
limited and I worried there would be a spot later on in the mission
where I might really need it and I ended up not using anything.

I just started up Thief:DS and was ready to go but part of me wants to
play Thief 2 first. Why don't I play it? Because I've heard it's
*hard* . Persuade me, give me tips, whatever *g*

Thanks!

It's no harder than Thief 1 and the game sequence trains you up in the
various skills in a nice progression. The graphics look much better
than Thief1.

Personally I prefer it to Thief 1 or Thief 3, but there is a lot of
debate about which is the best!. Most of the Fan Missions being
produced now are for TMA rather than TDP or TDS.

I recommend playing it before you play TDS to maintain the story
sequence.

Don't worry about arsenal, there's more than enough for you to
complete the priary objective.

Thief 2 is slightly easier after you've played through Thief 1 - you
know exactly how to play. On "Normal", the first map gives tutorials
on the basic gameplay so that you can at least clear the path.

The map design is generally meant to make it easier for the player to
complete the maps without running into too much difficulty - less tile
floors, more paths within a building, etc. There are somethings that
you will need to watch out for - but you'll find out soon enough.

As with Thief 1, there is at least one "point-of-no-return" where the
map becomes extremely difficult when you pass through a certain area.
While there is an "out" in this case, there's a very high chance of
failure - thankfully, you aren't required to enter that area.

I knew you all would persuade me *g*. I did have most of the links you
mentioned except the Keep of Metal and Gold. I'll give it a shot...I'm
a bit rusty. It's been three years since I played the original Thief
but hopefully it will be like riding a bike. Oh and I showed some
stuff from TVery HappyS to my husband (the first part of the walkthrough with
Garrett's Notebook) and he's tempted to play now. He's a flight sim
person but he said he could use the humor Smile

Thanks!

Celeste

P.S. I find the graphics still hold up fairly well...then again, it's
the gameplay that holds up Smile

Huh? What about the watchers and robots that are in Thief 2? The Bank
mission is way harder than anything in Thief 1 as is Sabotage at Soulforge.
You need a walkthru for that one.

Worst thing about fan missions is having to start without any weapons. Or
they drop you into the mission with a guard right near you so you have to
scramble to a hiding spot right off the bat with no weapons. Or there are 9
scrolls to read before you actually get into the action.

True, some fan missions are like that, but not all of them. The
Christine series of FM's is just as good if not better then the original
missions.
After trial and error, you know which FM makers games to play and
which to avoid.

The Christine missions are great. Another complaint is the guards who have
helmets on. You sneak up and hit them and clang the noise alerts his
buddies. That's why I save every 30 seconds when playing a fan mission.
Around the next corner will be a guard carrying a lantern!!! There goes your
hiding spot!

Don't forget the Rooftop mission in T2. The archers scene was hilarious...

Thief 2 is the best of the series, but TVery HappyS has the best level of any game
I've ever played, The Shalebridge Cradle. It's worth playing the whole game
just for this.
Make sure you take a dump before playing said level, you've been warned.

I enjoyed the Bank one, but gave up trying to finish Soulforge after I
realised it was annoying me so much I was in danger of snapping the CD
or putting the keyboard through the monitor.

I did snap the CD for Iron Storm.
Damn, did I feel great afterwards.

I found the making of mines to be a bit annoying especially having to
avoid the big bots.

Robots and watchers are taken out with either water arrows or fire
arrows. They are also slower than normal guards - while they may
chase you around, they won't be able to do it over long distances.

They also make fire arrows useful.

As long as the large robot has its back to you then 2 water arrows will do
it in. I used to sneak up from behind and while pressing the W key blackjack
them. It takes 18 whacks to dispose of them but now just use 2 water arrows.
It's so much less stressfull. Sometimes one fire arrow is not enough
depending on the mission maker.
