Why do you play Angband?

There was a thread here recently that discussed addiction to Angband
(and similar games).
This prompted me to ask why I play Angband.
I've thought about this and have come up with a few reasons of my
own, but would be interested to see if anyone agrees with me, or has
their own thoughts.

My reasons so far:-
1. To win the game (obvious).
2. To get the satisfaction of character development.
3. To improve on previous game (even if winner).
4. To find new things (eg. artefacts never before found - that's
why I usually play randards)
5. I enjoy the struggle of kit-juggling to get a good combo of
resists/bonuses/activations (esp in NPP)
6. Seeing something dangerous OOD and asking "how could I try to kill
this thing?".

These are generic reasons. My more specific ones are:-
a. I enjoy killing dragons - all of them (baby, young, mature,
ancient and wyrm).
b. I like seeing Wormtongue dead.
c. I love finding !Augmentation before stat-gain is over.
d. When I kill a wyrm and it turns from a D into a pile of
loot/goodies, I say 'BOOM' (really).

What are other players thoughts / reasons ?

Cheers,

tp

Yah Wink

Nah

I rarely play same class/race within same release, I would only play
again if there were significant changes

Eh. I dont like randarts they are either weaker, too strong or just the
same Wink

Yeah.

You like killing baby's eh ?

Yes !!

Yes

O K.
> What are other players thoughts / reasons ?

I started with playing Z dead knight amberite and enjoyed it so much
that I got hooked ( really long time ago ) since then new variants keep
adding spice ( now less than before ).
I just died to a Nazgul in XBand and man, that was a good game. The Z
spell book realms are still the best thing out there for magic in my
mind. I loved Ey, it was just too good. 3 winners I have on Ey, I dont
play it any more since there is nothing new and bands tend to age
fast.I am a card flopper, a dice chucker and RPG fan, and *bands are
just the thing for me. Strangely enough because of this I cannot/dont
want to get the hang of nethack/crawl, it is just not band enough Wink

Enough rambling,
T.

Why for the L337 3d graphics of course!!!

Seriously, I find roguelikes more challenging to the imagination than even
the best MMO or 3d RPG. They give me, I guess, some perverse thrill and the
rush of accomplishment that for some reason even the best of the modern
rpg's lack. I have spent years playing Everquest, WoW and their ilk, even
longer on the Might and Magics and Ultimas, yet I always come back to the
*bands for a break and some fun.
I have seldom actually won a *band since I stopped savefile cheating over a
decade ago, but for me actually winning is secondary to the fun of character
development.

1. Also to try to win. I have never won at a *band yet.
2. I love the Tolkien setting and items.
3. To find powerful and cool items.
4. They stimulate my imagination.
5. They are the most challenging, deep, intricate RPG type games I have ever
played.

I agree with these except I've never gotten past DL50 (and only gotten
past 30 once, I think), so I've never seen Augmentation or wyrms, and
there's enough normal artifacts I've never seen so I don't need to play
randarts for that reason.

I play Angband when I get too frustrated with Nethack. Nethack is more
interesting to me, but Angband can be just as fun and usually a good
bit less frustrating.

favorite race class combo: kobold priest.

It's a good game to kill time and stimulate brain.
I usualy play while listening to "talk radio" via the internet (Swedish
radio P1). The game does not requiere so much focus so I can listen to
news, debates, documentaries while playing. Ofcourse when I run into a
tricky level or a vault I sometimes need to decide - radio or vault...
Razz

And ofcourse, it's a challange to win the game with diffrent combos.

And I love the power-feeling when I find a great item - especially
early findings. A good sword that gives me a feeling of unstoppable..
or when gaining enough mana/skill to do a new cool stuff..

I like the depth and breath (sp?).
I like that the game flows on a fanless EPIA mini.
I like that I can play via SSH...

Favs Tome/Theme.

regards David.

Yes, I agree to some extent on the strength/weakness issue, my point
was more that once you know (with experience or spoilers) what the
standard set do, the game changes. Having the additional randomness
adds something back (IMHO). It also changes gameplay, because
*Identify* becomes important.

Sad, but true. I imagine the shape of the D describing a closed
container. When the D dies, the D-shape get cracked open and all the
goodies spill out - a bit like piñata I suppose. Perhaps I am an
over-visualiser.

Yes - i forgot about that one and defo agree. Nothing like finding an
uber-powerful weapon, then slashing thru the baddies with it. I've had
many YASD's because of that self-deluded unstoppableness.
