You can't get one as a *pet*, but if you grind rep with Darnassus, you can
get a big cat mount to ride.

Listen to what people are telling you. The riding animals are NOT
PETS, they are TRANSPORTATION. Night Elves get to ride the first one
at lvl 40, but with enough Faction anyone can get one.

Or lvl 60 and buy one for Marks of the different battlegrounds.
You'll have to buy riding skill 150 (for gold), too.

If you like the concept of an attacking pet as company you may want
to reroll a hunter (physical damage) or a warlock (magical damage),
which has a variety of demon pets for different situations.

All the non-combat pets are small. Only combat pets are large. So if
you want a big tiger, rolling a hunter is the only way.

Your mage can get a water elemental combat pet at L50 if he specs
frost.

Engineers can get mechanical combat pets.

There are items in the game that can summon combat pets, maybe even
tigers for all I know, but most of them only work a few times.
