I tamed a Rotting Agam'ar (L28) at L60, and it's not that difficult to
level up. Felstone Field is ideal, especially the skeletal mages. Until
your pet is high enough to do damage, it's just best to keep him out to
get the xp, and you get to use all the hunter skills you've forgotten
in the last 40 levels
Ranged L50-52 mobs like the mages are trivial - no L60 hunter is going
to lose a ranged firefight, and even the melee mobs just need a bit of
care. Fire Trap, then start with a stun to slow them down, and an aimed
shot and multi-shot combo (or even serpent sting for the dot) should
have them pretty low. When they get in melee range, you can wing clip
them, run a few yards and hit them on the turn with another multi-shot
and then finish them off with a sword. Any crit during this will finish
the fight in half the time. Ice Traps are useful for double pulls.
I guess it's 'tedious' in that you have to do different things, but
it's more interesting than just sending in a L60 pet and auto-piloting
autoshot. I've got my boar to L60, and I'd consider doing it again with
a different low level pet, just for the change of pace.
Felstone Field (when it's not completely botted out) is also a great
place for AD rep.
Oh, and it seems that pets use *your* level for aggro, not their own.
