Seriously, I didn't enjoy it at all.
Not even close to the 2D versions of the game, like mario world, the new
super mario, any / all of the old ones.
So....when people say that Mario Galaxy is the best thing since Mario
64, it's seriously putting me off.

Anyone else out there not like Mario 64? And anyone played Galaxy, who
also didn't like 64? If so, how is it?

Cheers,
alan d

You might be all alone on this one, I loved Mario 64. It seems that
you liked all of the 2d Mario Games, and you didn't like one of the
only 3d ones, Mario 64. Did you like Sunshine? What was it that you
thought was bad about Mario 64? Answer these questions and you will
know if you will like Galaxy.

You're certainly not alone even though you're in the minority.

I've read plenty of opinions ranging from
"Mario 64 was overrated"
to "I hated Mario 64"
and everything inbetween.

Myself... I bought the Nintendo 64 specifically for (believe it or
not) Pilotwings 64. that's the game that sold me on getting a
Japanese system in July 1996 before the U.S. release. I've always
had a soft spot for 'lite' flight simulators. So I am in the minority
also.

I played through Mario 64 and while I thought it was good at the time,
I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I did Super Mario World or Super
Mario All-Stars SNES remakes of SMB2 and SMB3.

I like Galaxy so much more than M64 or Sunshine because of the level
design and art direction, but if you really hated M64 you probably
won't like Galaxy even though it's different. it's still a 3D Mario
game, although Nintendo did their best to capture the spirit of the 2D
platformers in a 3D world.

If it helps, I thought Mario 64 was good, and acknowledge what it did
to put 3D platformers on the map (I didn't think it was awesome by any
means). I found Galaxy actually more fun and more interesting. If
you have a Wii, and can rent it, do that. You may end up really
liking it.

I am in the minority as well, I didnt really enjoy Mario64 when it
came out at all (although I did download it and am enjoying it more, I
blame the N64 controller). but I love Galaxy so far, by the time you
play through the first board the controls are almost second nature.
lets you just enjoy the beauty of the game.

now I'll really put my opinion up on the chopping block. I loved
Sunshine. Yes I know that it lost its "mario" feel, but it is a great
game in its own rite.

In Galaxy its cool because lots of the time the little planets you are
on have their own gravity so you can't fall off, but thats not always
the case. There are many puzzles where you have to jump around from
platform to platform avoiding gaps and obstacles, and if that is
something you can't get a hang of then this game probably won't work
for you. Even still it should be at least worth the cost of a rental.

First off, cheers to all of you who responded.
I actually thought sunshine was ok'ish. But didn't play it that much.
I found it boring having to walk around, and I didn't have a clue about
what I needed to do a lot of the time.

Anyway, thats kinda the same for Mario 64. Lots and lots of boring
walking / running, to get to a new level. Also, walking in a straight
line was a little hard. Ok, not hard as such, but I found that if I
went for a long jump from platform to platform, I would often miss, or
land on the side edge etc. This resulted in me falling off, and having
to go back, and do it all the same. I wasn't under or over jumping, but
just doing so at a bit of an angle. Resulting in me having to re-align,
and get ready for another jump, and in that time something would hit /
push / kill me.

On the 2d games, it wasn't like this. The levels were action packed
all the way. Also, you can only walk in straight lines.
If you were jumping up platforms, you couldn't fall of the side, so you
didn't have that issue. The 2d games seem so much faster as well.

On Mario 64, I found that even simple things like jumping on the enemies
was a bit of hard work, as you had to aim quite well. Whereas on the 2d
ones, it was so much easy, again as it was on 2d rather them 3d.

I like first person shooters like res evil on the Wii, timesplitters,
perfect dark, quake etc. But the elements of those games that
frustrates me is the jumping on platforms bit, as you may miss the side,
or not land perfectly straight on (transformers on the ps2 is a fine
example).

Anyway, I'm still thinking about the idea. I've seen some long demo's
on the net, and yes it does look good. It looks very nice, and it looks
more like a game that I would enjoy. More action packed, and plenty to
do. But, I'll keep thinking. For the time being, I'm going for Paper
Mario on the Wii, and the new Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicals.

I may get Mario Galaxy at some point though (or get someone else to buy
it, and "borrow" it) Smile

Cheers again for the responses from all of you.

I only played Mario 64 when I downloaded on the Wii to see what all
the fuss was about and I was totally unimpressed with it.

I really like it, it is what a 3D platform game should be.

Mind you this is now a 12 year old game. Hard to believe. These were
very impressive graphics at the time.

Mario 64 is tied to the n64 controller in my own opinion.
You will not have the full enjoyment of this without the 64 controller
in your hand. The Z button is critical. Moreover, the 64 analog stick
is
pretty much unique. It's even different from the gamecube analog
stick, and it's better.

I tried playing Mario Sunshine and it just sucked.
The controls were lame without the Z button (or at least the location
of it),
and something just seemed to be amiss. Might be time to sell it off.
I already sold Mario Golf Toadstool's tour... the cube was
just not a very good system in my opinion. Most of the can't miss
games somehow
missed, even when the predecessors had set the table for them.
