In this generation war for console supremacy, the movie format is
supposed to be a major issue, one which Sony is banking on winning so
that the PS3 will come out on top.
However, I have a question. What percentage of people actually use
their videogame systems now as their DVD players? I am curious if I
am a rare few (more of an issue of space, and owning all systems). If
it isn't that large, then why would whatever format wins the next gen
war have an impact on console sales? Last gen, Sony did get a jump by
having the PS2 as one of the cheapest DVD players, but what about this
generation? Why will it matter that much?

I think it's the opposite... Sony is depending on the PS3 to make Blu-
Ray a success in the movie format market rather than having Blu-Ray
making the PS3 a success in the gaming market.... Right now the games
market is many, many times the size of the HD disc format market.
But to answer your question... Connected to the same television I have
a 360, a Wii, a PS3 and an HD-DVR/HD Tuner. I disconnected a 1080p
upgrading DVD player to make room for the PS3.
I find the picture quality better on both the PS3 and Xbox 360 than on
my upgrading player (Phillips DVP 5982 using HDMI) and see no reason
to re-connect it.

If they can get all the studios to sign up to Blue Ray only and kill off
HDDVD, it doesn't matter how many people will use their PS3 to play movies
in a couple of years, they've won the battle already. >> Stay informed about: How many people use their videogame systems as their DVD p.. |

That's always been my take on Sony's approach. But to answer the
original poster's question, I didn't bother with DVDs until the first
dedicated player was $199. After that, my computer DVD drive became
my primary drive for playback (since it was the cheapest to replace
and my monitor is sharper and only a bit smaller than my TV), followed
by my dedicated DVD player, followed by my games console.
The HD-DVD drive for the 360 doesn't affect whether I lose my 360 if
it breaks, and it can also be used on my Vista PC. For blu-ray, the
cheapest decent option is getting a PS3, and using it would mean
shortening the life of the PS3, so that option is out. I'll wait for
a dedicated and upgradable blu-ray player to hit $199 before bothering
with that format, like I did with DVD. No movie is worth paying more
than that for me. >> Stay informed about: How many people use their videogame systems as their DVD p.. |

My PS3 retired my PS2 to the bedroom. It also retired my DVD player to the
closet. The PS3 is really all you need for CD/DVD/Blu-ray/Network/internet
based entertainment. It's not a space issue either.
However, you ask if Blu-ray in the PS3 will have an impact on console sales.
I think slightly. There are alot of people out there that are only holding
off because of the War and once the war is over they'd gladly pick a side.
PS3 represents alot of value in it's cost. By Value i mean that it
definitely does alot more than other stand-alone blu-ray players. With that
said, i cant see why many fence sitters wouldnt take to the PS3 instead of a
stand-alone player. Simply for the fact that it does so much more, and
they'll get better bang for their bucks. As you can see above, my PS3 has no
problem filling multiple rolls. >> Stay informed about: How many people use their videogame systems as their DVD p.. |

Which video format will dominate, which is what seems more important to them,
they've knowingly given up ground in the console race to gain it in the video
one. >> Stay informed about: How many people use their videogame systems as their DVD p.. |

what planet do you live on?
1) where can I buy a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player for $25?
2) a movie runs for a what? a couple hours? games like Oblivion spin the
disc for hundreds of hours. maybe you should stop playing games so you
won't wear your console out even faster...
3) extended warranties. ever heard of them? if not:
4) decreasing costs of production mean the PS3 will continue to retail for
less, so in the off chance I might actually 'wear out the disc drive',
something I've had happen exactly ONCE (Thompson drive in the launch xbox)
in my lifetime, getting a replacement isn't going to 'break me'. >> Stay informed about: How many people use their videogame systems as their DVD p.. |

Not anywhere I know of. Why? OP said DVD player not HD.

Play DVD's all you want... I do not and will not. I have a DVD player which
is what I use.
