My IR remote control has to be within 3 feet of my 360 in order for it
to work. WTF?

The same remote (Harmony universal) will control my TV, stereo and
cable box from 50 feet away! I have two other compatible remotes -
including the one that came with the HD DVD add on - and they will
only work if they are within 2 feet or the 360.

This is my third 360. All of them have had terrible reception for the
remote control, but this new Elite is the worst. I talked to MS tech
support and they say they never heard of this problem! I find this
hard to believe. Am I the only one who uses an infrared remote
instead of the wireless controller when watching movies or using the
dashboard? I also like to use the remote to skip songs (without
pausing the game) while playing Forza and PGR4.

My solution was to cut a one inch hole in the faceplate where the IR
window used to be. It sure looks ugly, but the remote works just fine
now!!

John

2 things...

Check the batteries in the remote. If you have a multimeter, fresh
batteries should be 1.5 volts.

Second, the 360 ships with a clear plastic sticker covering the IR
port. Make sure you take that off.

I use the Harmony 880 with my Elite, it works beautifully..even from the
next room! Sounds like you've got some interference or something.

The batteries in the remote are new and the sticker was gone. It was
the same with three different remotes.

I think the problem was with the IR window in the faceplate not lining
up with the receiver properly. When I removed the faceplate, the
remote worked from 30 feet with no problem. Fortunately I had a spare
black faceplate, so I simply cut a 1 inch hole in the plate where the
IR window was. Now the remote works great! It actually doesn't look
that bad either. Since its black you really can't see the hole unless
you get right up to it and look.

Thanks for the replies.
