The batteries in the remote are new and the sticker was gone. It was
the same with three different remotes.
I think the problem was with the IR window in the faceplate not lining
up with the receiver properly. When I removed the faceplate, the
remote worked from 30 feet with no problem. Fortunately I had a spare
black faceplate, so I simply cut a 1 inch hole in the plate where the
IR window was. Now the remote works great! It actually doesn't look
that bad either. Since its black you really can't see the hole unless
you get right up to it and look.
