While I don't agree with the criticisms levelled at Brad for shipping
GC2 without copy protection, and instead protecting the availability of
patches (I'm not sure how effective it will be, but it's a perfectly
reasonable approach), I would like to get straight some nomenclature.
A patch is an update for a program, which fixes some bug(s) and/or
makes UI improvements. Maybe there are gameplay changes too, sometimes
for balance, sometimes in response to user feedback, etc.
For a very old game a patch may be a de facto expansion with quite a
lot of gameplay changes (eg. Diablo II patch 1.10), but this is not the
case for a new game, since nobody has had time to exhaust the original
content.
A "bonus pack" (or "bonus pak" if correct spelling isn't your thing) is
kind of like a mini-expansion to a game, with new content. This can
either be because said content wasn't quite ready come deadline day, or
because it was held back to reward purchasers of some premium edition,
or simply because the devs had some great ideas just after shipping.
So, Brad, is 1.0X a patch or a bonus pack, or both?
Also, can somebody clarify exactly what is in the Collector's Edition?
I had thought from previous threads that the CE just gave you some
printed material (manual, tech tree or something), NOT additional game
content. From reading Jeremy's tribulations acquiring 1.0X I now wonder
if in fact the CE does have some additional game content after all, in
which case I'd have to try and find that instead (probably quite hard
in the UK - but then again my local Game store isn't stocking GC2 at
all).
Hmph. Why aren't these things ever SIMPLE?
