Hi,

I found a whole bunch of lead soldiers and thought of painting them; I've
only dealt with plastic or resin figures before.

(I assume they are lead- because they are very heavy, the material is shiny,
soft and bendable.)

Do you need a primer paint for the lead soldiers?

Will the lead soldiers take waterbased paint or can they only take enamel?

Cool.

Probably.

It's best to prime them. I recomend Tamiya fine grey.

Sure you can paint with acrylic paints. It's best to prime them well.

Thanks Robert, yeah on more question- is it better to paint using enamel or
waterbased?

Reason why I ask is cos I have a big tin of enamel metal etching primer
which I originally bought to paint my metal postbox. We have since changed
it to brick. So rather than tossing the primer out- I thought of using it
for the lead soldiers.

Paint or prime? Two different things.

Clean off all the flashing et al with a craft knife or file. Wash the
minis to remove all finger grease and any other dirt. When dry prime
with something that will seal the metal and give you a good painting
surface.

You could test your etching primer but I think it's likely to damage
them. If they have moulded bases, try on the bottom of one of them.

The word "etching" bothers me somewhat.

A pot of acrylic primer would set you back about 1.50 uk pounds.
Personally, I'd rather spend the money than risk damaging figures.

With metal figures I rub them fown lightly with a brass brush.
This is not the huge ones you use on shoes but like a big toothbrush size.
I got a set of a steel, brass and plastic bristled brushes from a discount
shop.
I'd think you'll likely have similar sets in the equivalent local.

What for? I do sometimes when stripping paint, to break the skin and let
the meths get underneath, but if he's got old minis with a high lead
content as it sounds, it'll just damage them.

Even if they're wholly lead it'll not damage them unless your REALLY rub at
them.
I rub metal figures down as it keys them up slightly for the primer.
