Archived from groups: rec>games>miniatures>warhammer (more info?)

Hobby-wise, August has been a truly productive month.

Since the last thread started, I've been extremely productive. I
finished building practically every remaining Space Marine model that I
own, and I had quite a fair pile of of models to work on. All of my
Space Marines are in "graded" squads, with squad-specific helmets, legs,
(Tactical) torsos, and (Assault) arms. This way, just glancing at the
shape allows me to know who goes where. Smile

As a result of very careful Bitz selection, I have the ability to field
an all-Beakie force of Commander, 2 Tacticals, 2 Assault, and 1
Devastator squad. Very Happy

1 Commander
3 Command Squad

I'll probably build another with Captain Stern's sword. I also built a
cheapo Commander for when I play shooty Marines. He leads an
Apothecary, and will take a couple Plasma Cannons. I think this is a
good combination that will take the nonsense out of fielding Plasma
Cannons. Smile

11 Tacticals
15 Assault Marines
5 Devastators

These guys are mundane. I've been good about using up my pouch Bitz on
the Tacticals & Devs, and modeling Frag on the Assault Marines.

3 Assault Veterans with Lightning Claws.

The Lightning Claws were all converted from the 40k2 Termies. The metal
Lightning Claws look *much* better than the new plastics and Veteran
set. I cut the forearms at the elbow joint with a razor saw, and
hollowed out the interface. Each arm was pinned into a cut-down plastic
upper arm & elbow using liberal amounts of SGT to produce an extremely
strong, gapless joint. The extra weight, along with the obligatory
penny in the base, makes them super-stable. Of course, the Beakies are
wearing the RT-era "Mk.1" Claws. Very Happy

1 Assault Veterans w/ Power Sword

Based on Feedback, I built a Beakie Assault Marine with a Power Weapon.
He's got the Termie Commander sword, and it looks awesome.

10 Terminators

As I tore their arms off, I no longer have a Termie Assault Squad, so I
was forced to deal with (and basically re-arm) all of my Termies.
Fortunately, I had a *LOT* of spare Termie bits, and they were "enough"
to give me a Commander w/ Lightning Claws, Veteran w/ SB&PW, 2 Assault
Cannons PF, 2 Cyclones w/ SB&PF, and 5 SB&PF. If I want to field my
Land Raiders, I can field them as 2 squads of 5. Ultimately, I'll want
to trade them for plastic, to match style with the rest of the army but
this won't happen any time soon. Wink

1 OOP Grey Knight Terminator

This last Goodwin-sculpted GK Terminator bumps my OOP GK Termies to 6
models. They can ride in the Land Raider Crusader as Assault
Terminators w/ Lighting Claws. Smile

5 Deathwatch Marines

These are all wearing Mk.8 "Errant" armour, with the armored belly
cables. As I have so many Mk.6 Beakies, Mk.8 doesn't mesh well with my
army. I was tempted to trade them off as unusable, but then remembered
I had a big pile of Deathwatch shoulderpads sitting unused. So these
will be dedicated as the first squad of Marine Allies taken by my
Inquisitional WH or DH forces. They should look really good painted in
Silver & Black (Go Raiders!!!). Surprised

3 Sisters w/ Bolters
3 Sisters w/ Assault Weapons

Switching gears, these are the last of my unbuilt Sisters. I have a
trade in the works for few more Sisters. While this wasn't the original
plan, my WH forces are getting quite good-sized: Superior, 5 Elites w/
MM, 2 squads of 10 Sisters w/ HF&F, 5 Retributors w/ HB. My
"Inquisitional" storage case is practically full, so this makes a good
stopping point. Tho I do admit to wanting a full-conversion Penitent
Engine when I get more time.

1 OOP Wood Elf Forest Dragon.

This is WiP for WFB7, and will go into my Dogs of War army as Asarnil's
mount, in lieu of the plastic Talisman dragon that he normally rides.
As I've mentioned, I really love how huge the Forest Dragon and
especially his arms are. Tho his legs seem a bit puny. So far, I've
got the tail to torso done, with his little legs & feet. Everything is
solidly pinned up, so he's going to be a very sturdy model. I need to
replace his WFB5 40mm base with a WFB7 50mm base before can I go much
further with him. Sad

I've not yet decided on his rider. I'd very much like to convert up a
female Knight, but I'm already using Bertha as the basis for my
Paymistress / Warrior Priest. I will likely use Asarnil proper as his
rider. Smile

As I said, I've been quite busy over the past few weeks, having built
(or rebuilt) 50 models. Granted that they need a lot of painting work,
but still, it's solid progress.

What are the rest of you lot up to?

I started my personal space wolf army three or so weeks ago (see previous
post titled 'it's true - everything Myrmidon says is true' for actual start
date - that's when the models got here). I managed to fit it in-between
actual paying work and so far have finished the painting on:

20 grey wolfs
5 long fangs
7 terminators
1 wolf priest
1 dread
2 rhinos
1 land speeder w/ assault cannon

Once I finish the Land Raider crusader, the venerable dread and convert the
wolf lord into something more menacing, I should have a little over 2,000
pts of brand new puppies.

So now we know what minis you were stripping in CSC.

That is an awesome amount of work. I assume these were painted to match
the SW on your webpage?

Sounds like you have a mix of old and new minis. I'm curious to see how
they mesh.

Hobby wise - not much. First I was swamped with work. Immediatly after
that deadline passed training started up again and that's going to
really hectic for one more week before settling to a more normal level.

I've managed to paint a little bit on the 8 remaining High Elf
spearmen, but no progress what so ever on the Nurgle HQ or the looted
Leman Russ. Today I had some time and that was spent cleaning off the
mold lines almost all Skull Pass gobbos.

The Skull Pass gobbos are pretty good. Smaller than before, which I
think is a good thing because it makes them look weedier. There's not
a lot of variation, but I think that'll be just fine when they're
mixed with one new boxes of night gobbos. The Skull Pass troll is
really ugly (and I don't mean ugly in an appropriately trollish way),
but I intend to fix that by giving it a new green stuff nose.

I have been moderately productive due to an unexpected side effect, I have
been slowly transferring my 40k figs onto 25mm washers because I like the
extra weight and balance it gives the plastics, which is all very well, but
then a mate who is a signwriter gave me some offcuts of magnetic sign
material to see what use I can find of it, and low and behold, the washer
based figs stick to the magnetic.........

So I have been cutting it to fit into the storage boxes like a madman and
rebasing every figure that comes into reach, on top of this its forcing me
to finish off partially done figures and look into the base detailing for
them.

Next up is a visit to a wholesaler for another few hundred M6x25 washers,
some M6x40 washers (heavy weapons bases for my IG) and find out what other
sizes they do., then I just need to find a supply of 20mmx40mm thin metal
bits for the same purpose. I can stick the magnetic to itself but it adds to
thikcness of the bases quite a lot, and is too flexible to make the base
from on its own.

Pretty much - I'm a second edition codex kind of guy - so since most of the
figures I'm using are waaayyyyy OOP, that's what I'm going with. I've toned
'em down a little with not nearly so much red as GDub likes. But I'm
pretty pleased.

Actually, quite well IMHO. I'm using all OOP 2nd edition metal minis as
grey hunters and new plastic minis as blood claws. I've also been
considering digging-out some of my rogue-trader era beakies as more grey
hunters - or wolf guard not in terminator armor. But it's been fun building
a marine army for myself instead of somebody else and I do like how the
space wolves are looking.

Business wise, I just ordered over 1,000$ worth of miniatures from Eureka
miniatures in Australia - almost all for my customers. So I'm going to be
busy painting-up lots of little civil war guys for the foreseable future.
Which is just one more reason why I'm humping-out the space puppies - in a
couple of weeks I will be swamped...

You've got me beat by far, I've only fiddled with a couple of
conversions...but I did get a bunch of stuff at 50% off at a store
closeout. Below is a companion to the ex-nurgle guy I posted a WIP pic
of earlier (who is still waiting for a visor). This guy is pretty bad
ass, the Chaos standard bearer from the Chaos army box for a body,
Mordheim "Orc" pitfighter boar-head helm, old Worldeater halberd, and a
Dragonlord minis Draconis runeshield. I can't wait to paint him.

So it doesn't bother you that your SW are slightly "undersized" compared
to current models?

Also, are you rebasing your Termies from the 25mm bases that they were
supplied with to the 40mm bases now in use?

So just a little less red? That doesn't seem like much of a change.

I think the size and style difference here may be too much to bridge.
RT-era Beakies are positively tiny compared to modern 40k3+ SM.

At this point, I think RT-era Beakies might be best for use as S3 T3
Inquisitors in Power Armour.

Yup, time management is key.

Prep is one of the least-rewarding things to do - it's so invisible when
it's done properly.

I agree. Smaller gobbos are a good thing, to help emphasize size
differences between different types of Greenskins.

The main question is whether the look good ranked up. If so, then
limited variation doesn't matter.

If it's just a little nose job, the model can't be that bad. Certainly
not enough to buy a $10 metal model for.

I make do with gluing a penny into the base. The extra little bit seems
to be alright. As 20mm washers cost more than $0.01 USD each, I just
can't justify buying them as base weights. At this point, I've got under
$1 worth of pennies as base weights.

> Next up is a visit to a wholesaler for another few hundred M6x25 washers,

Just how many 40k plastic infantry do you have?

And again, if it's all the same, I'd recommend 20mm washers that fit
inside within the plastic base vs. 25mm washers that fit under the
plastic base.

Just some clean ups of my old CSMs mostly.
Based them all. Only took 10 years for some them. Smile
Finishing off sculpting.
A few speciality weapons. hooks, PPs, PFs etc
My Sorc Lords Disk of Tz.
Repainting my chosen to catch them up with what I've learnt since I did
them.
[SWP] http://bullgod.org/moodgod/war/nega/nega.jsp
I'd better go take pictures and update the site now I guess.

So this means my CSMs should look like a good army pretty soon. No
competition winners but good and intresting looking on the battlefield.
I might even get back into 40k4 play rather than WFB.

It's only one month. I can't sustain this kind of maniac level for more
than a few months before I need to slow down or take a break.

This year, I've had a plan in the back of my head and tracked all of my
hobby progress. I've not really followed the plan (still no progress on
Ogre or BFG Eldar), but this is definitely shaping up to be one of my
better years.

Looking good. I should probably take a few WIP pics of my SM, just for
posterity's sake.

Not one bit. The old RT-era and 2nd edition figures fit in perfectly with
my existing collection of eldar, impy guard, 'nids and squats. Plus I
prefer metal figures over plastic - so I try to buy the old stuff whenever I
can.

Yup - all the termies are remounted. It's probably my one concession to the
new rules.

Change? They look like space wolves out of the codex... that's kind of the
point, I suppose. As a historical gamer at heart, I prefer to make things
look like they're supposed-to according to the written record.
Unfortunately, GW writes the history....

Well, it seems to be the case in American pro football....

As a historical gamer who uses lots of different manufacturers in the same
army, I'm used to the small size variations. So far as bridging the size
gap - that's kind of my opponent's problem, not mine. Besides this space
wolf army is mostly being built as an OPFOR for my eldar army anyway. I got
tired of trying to proxy Impy Gd or 'stealers as marines in test games...

I've got sixty of 'em... I think they get to be marines.

I have painted sooooo many marines over the years that I pretty much never
needed or wanted an army of 'em. All my friends had marine armies and I
played against them whenever I played 40k. And then I moved 700 miles away
from where I had lived the last sixteen years. So now I need a marine
army....

True. And now that the NFL season has started, I'm even more pressed.
Since thursday I've watched three football games and will watch another one
tonight...

Over 100 Marines, 50 or so chaos Marines, probably 150 Elder, 200 or more
Imperial Guard, ummmm I think the answer is coming close to, wayyyyy too
many........ then there are all the Roleplaying chars that are going onto
them, and skirmish figs, cowboys and the like, etc etc.

I replace the plastic base entirely with the 25mm washer, the main reason
everything is going onto these bases is that they stick to magnetic sheeting
where coins of the realm don't. That and washers are about 4p and 2p coins
are 2p so its only double the value for something that is magnetic friendly.
After spedning this much on GW figures, the cost of these bases is
miniscule........
