I know that Hawkslayer can be quite a buff according to Guidebook, but
what things are nice to have as companions ? I tried spiders, but they
seem to be way too fragile. Now I'm "enhancing" a lightning lizard in
Big Room since my character has lightning immunity. Forget that one if
your character doesn't have that...lizard doesn't distinguish between
friends and foes when it used lighting bolt. At lvl 31 it is killing
lot more than my High Elven priest at lvl 18. Especially funny is to
have it mow down those summoned hordes.

Cave bears. Play Trollish or Dwarven Bards. These things are
invincible in the early game. 3 Attacks, high PV, and uh...just
totally badass. Since you are bard, they won't rebel. Sweet.

On a more serious note... I have played a few games trying to get the
Cute Puppy as a legitimate companion. I start as a Healer so that I get
a bunch of healing potions to throw at the puppy in case it gets in
danger... maybe a Wizard with Cure (x) Wounds would last a bit longer...

Anywho, I start by bringing it rats and goblins from the cavernous level
in the Puppy Cave (I start training it right away, becauseI don't
feel like messing around with generating it, then coming back when I'm
better equipped to help it... also, the character killing more enemies
would make them stronger and harder for the puppy to deal with). In
theory, I would gradually build up to stronger and stronger monsters
until it could hang around on its own without the risk of getting mauled.

Unfortunately, I haven't had all too much success with that. I think
the most kills I've gotten out of the cute puppy is like six... then an
orc or goblin killed it.

It's kind of fun to try; the idea of an immensely strong Cute Puppy is
just too enticing... and I don't want to waste a wish for a Cute Puppy
later in the game or anything because that would just be dumb.

Not been playing Adom long... But my 3rd character a grey elven bard
charmed a tarantula named "Poon" who was guarding the bracers of war,
she stuck with me for a while and was very very hard before I
carelessly lost her in those infinite dungeons.

I'm still playing the same character, was quite easy for a while as I
seemed to regenerate damage as fast as I was hit but now things are
pretty tough I'm down by the earth temple and getting totally mauled.
I think I need more xp as I'm only level 29 and I suspect I need better
armour as I'm getting hit a lot, damn grues ruined two red dragon scale
armours. Any advice?

What does "ordinary" mean? I think the general consensus is that a killer
bug is the best monster which is tameable by the music skill, if thats
what you mean...

Killerbug would only be available to high level PCs. So the giant boar is
usefull for the low-level musician because it is also fast.

Trying to tame a giant boar at low level would be *extremely* dangerous. I
think I'd rather take my chances with a killer bug.

But then again, Giant boars can only be generated in the wilderness after
the PC acchieves experience level 15. And also, didn't Trinity (the level
1 chaos god) use a killer bug as pet?

With "ordinary" I ment a monster that can be tamed by music and is not
created in places creating extremely dangerous ones (SMC and Dwarven
Halls).

Ive tamed a Killer Bug at level 1. It takes a lot of guts, a bit of luck and
very careful, turn-by-turn manipulation.

Some form of Bard character.
