Dear all,

I apologize for the disruption to your group, but I am conducting an
online card guessing task on surveymonkey for my dissertation. I am
now in search of anybody who might participate and I am trying get
participants from all different walks of life (ages, religions,
cultures, genders), hence why I am emailing your group. All data will
remain completely anonymous, and should take about 30 minutes to
complete. Everybody who enters will also have the opportunity to win 1
of 2 online gift certificates. This research has been approved by the
ethics board at the University of New Hampshire.

The link for the survey is:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=1JCDJKI5pdC1oTeutBCzFA_3d_3d

Please feel free to contact me with any questions. My information is
on the research consent page. Thank you!

Best,
Erin

Ahhhh...that's a bit harsh- you don't know me. I'm not collecting
personal data; I'm just really trying to finish my dissertation. Such
anger...tsk tsk.

All in this group. I apologize. I am not trying to offend/annoy
anybody. Please delete/skip over my message if it bothers you. As you
can see I am not just mass emailing and collecting all kinds of
personal information. I'm a 26 year old student at UNH. For my
dissertation, I needed to get participants online and there are not a
lot of resources available to do that. I did not consider this spam as
much as a plea for assistance. Further, my recruitment methods were
approved by a committee of people (one of whom has published a book on
statistics). Also, Seebs I teach statistics so I am well aware of self-
selection, which is why I am using specific recruitment procedures.
Again, I am sorry if I bothered you (and no, haha I will not set
myself on fire - I have too much to live for, thanks though).

No, it's not harsh. Do your dissertation work in an appropriate
forum. Or accept that the proper result of your survey is "I was
reviled, correctly, as a subhuman spammer and invited to set myself on
fire for the betterment of humanity."

I don't need to. Being a spammer is defined as spamming. You
spammed our newsgroup. Now go light yoruself on fire.

Why you spammed is irrelevant. You spammed. That makes you a
spammer.

Now go light yourself on fire.

Most spammers probably don't have access to matches, or the knowledge
of how to use them.

Well, you're also spamming.

Also, any dissertation based on self-selected survey participants won't
be worth the paper it's printed on. Go take a 1st year statistics class.

ahhh... accckk... thhffft.... gawd. more spam... apologetic whiny spam too.

These aren't the droids you are looking for, Darth.

This is rec.games.frp.dnd, unless your spam is about game theory, RPG's,
fantasy roleplaying, or dungeons and dragons, it is irrelevant here.

Yahoo or Myspace, or or Facebook would be a much better place to recruit
guinea pigs for you online Frankenstien style statistics experiments.

Geez, where is Michael Scott Brown when we really need him?

That doesn't work. You are making us all pay for the service that your
message is running on, same as any other spammer.

> As you

Not all spam is mass email. Posting things to Usenet can also be spam.

Right. That doesn't mean you're entitled to hijack something else that
isn't a resource to do that, and use it as though it were.

> I did not consider this spam as

A plea for assistance, sent to the wrong place, over a broadcast medium, is
spam.

> Further, my recruitment methods were
> approved by a committee of people (one of whom has published a book on

Maybe you should find a committee of people who have ever heard of etiquette.

Is your post a discussion of D&D? If not, posting it here is decidedly
inappropriate.

> Also, Seebs I teach statistics so I am well aware of self-
> selection, which is why I am using specific recruitment procedures.

If they start by asking people to respond, I think you're doomed.

> Again, I am sorry if I bothered you (and no, haha I will not set
> myself on fire - I have too much to live for, thanks though).

I wouldn't expect you to set yourself on fire.

But, if you're serious about being sorry that you bothered people, why are
you getting all defensive and trying to justify your behavior? Why not,
instead, spend the ten minutes or so it would take to find out what Usenet
is, what "spam" is in the context of Usenet, and understand why your
decision does not meet with universal approval?

We all make mistakes. The secret is to accept criticism and investigate it,
rather than getting all defensive. Take it as an opportunity to learn
something rather than trying to prove your critics wrong.

Let's put this in perspective. I've been using Usenet since *before you
were born*. It is dimly possible that I might know something about it.

Neither would I. Nor would Terry, he just suggests that spammers do;
he doesn't ever expect them to take the advice.

And you're not the only one. I've been online AND playing *D&D since
several years before she was born. Usenet, not quite -- I didn't get
onto Usenet until the late '80s (if you were on it 26 years ago, you
must be one of the Originals, eh?)

I was sitting on math books to reach the keyboard of an ADM3a to read
Usenet before the Great Renaming. Not all that long before, so it's possible
that I was actually only using Usenet while the OP was in diapers.

Yeah, but you don't like good beer. I think a strip club brewpub would be a
good compromise, if there is such a thing.
