I've been trying to get online to GameSpy thru FSX for a time (via
multiplayer) but it keeps giving me connection failed. I'm connecting
through a router so I suspect I need to tweak some settings to get out on
the 'net and to GameSpy.

Can anyone give me a hand on getting this thing configured?

Thanks in advance

Bob

Do you have Windows firewall on?

Check the MS knowledge base for FS and ports that need to be open for
multiplayer.

Guten Tag Brett
Still flying online IVAO with fs9.
Intend to do so with fsX/Vista/DX10capable hardware soon.
I'm interested in the advantages of GameSpy versus IVAO.
i.e.
1)can GameSpy display add on aircraft ?
2)can fs9 connect to GameSpy ?
3)does GameSpy contain voice communication btw gamers ?
4)max lateral and vertical distance two gamers 'see' each other in VMC
5)is weather (clouds, fog, precipitation) displayed in GameSpy
6)max number of other gamer aircraft in my vicinity can be displayed
7)does Gamespy contain a TCAS
8)is the tranponder function modelled in GameSpy
9)do gamers hear engine sounds of other nearby gamers
10) what a/c animations (gearUP/DOWN,doors,flap
settings, lights, feathered prop)can be displayed in GameSpy
11) does Gamespy display liveries correctly
12) how many LOD numbers (level of detail) can be displayed in GameSpy

What else GameSpy advantages.
Happy to learn

Default ports for multiplayer in FSK is 6112-6122
Open those ports in port fowarding on your router.
Its a shame M$ took out the direct I.P. to I.P. multiplayer function. Just
another reduction in the product.

As far as I'm aware routers with built in NAT protection prevent IP to IP.
Outsiders only see the routers IP address rather than the users connected to
it.
Like Hood says you need to forward the ports to the IP address of the pc
with FS9. If your router automatically assigns IP addresses you may have to
set your FS pc up as a fixed ip otherwise the forwarded data would get to
you. Sometimes you get lucky and get same ip everytime pc is booted.

Why do you bother with IVAO when there is VATSIM? IVAO is usually
empty when I look at it. I've seen 1600 aircraft at a time on VATSIM.
And most of the activity in VATSIM is concentrated in Europe and the
United States (depending on the time of day).

I'll answer your questions for VATSIM:

> 1)can VATSIM display add on aircraft ?

Yes.

> 2)can fs9 connect to VATSIM ?

Yes.

> 3)does VATSIM contain voice communication btw gamers ?

Yes. You have your choice of voice or text communication.

> 4)max lateral and vertical distance two gamers 'see' each other in VMC

Ten nautical miles (a limit imposed by MSFS). However, radio
communications extend further.

> 5)is weather (clouds,fog,precipitation) displayed in VATSIM

Yes, real-time weather is the only option. The VATSIM network keeps
all weather up to date.

> 6)max number of other gamer aircraft in my vicinity can be displayed

I'm not sure of the upper limit, I believe it is imposed by MSFS.
I've seen at least two dozen at once in some cases (at busy airports).

> 7)does VATSIM contain a TCAS

Yes.

> 8)is the tranponder function modelled in VATSIM

Yes. You can see the queries from other aircraft and radar hitting
your Mode C or S transponder.

> 9)do gamers hear engine sounds of other nearby gamers

Yes.

> 10) what a/c animations (gearUP/DOWN,doors,flap
> settings,lights,feathered prop)can be displayed in VATSIM

I'm rarely close enough to see in detail, but I know gear is visible,
and lights. This depends on what individual players set in their
parameters, though.

> 11) does VATSIM display liveries correctly

Yes.

> What else VATSIM advantages.

VATSIM is the place to be if you want simulation that is as rigorously
close to real life as possible, including live air traffic control.

On the other hand, VATSIM is not a gaming network, and hardcore gamers
are not welcome (people pretending to be military fighter planes
strafing other aircraft, people pretending to be hijacked, people
looking for baby elephants, and other similar wastes of time). You
are expected to fly exactly as in real life, including observation of
all regulations and all real-world restrictions (no slewing at
lightspeed, no starting on the runway, etc.).

Thanks, that worked. In my router I had to create a virtual server and
router the port 6112 to my IP.

Appreciate all the responses. See everyone in the air!

can fs9 connect to GameSpy ?

1. Can FSX connect to VATSIM (via dedicated software: fsupic, roger wilco,
etc) ?
2. Can I use for that my laptop in home network as second computer to
connect with VATSIM, but flying on PC ?

Regards,

Paul

Sorry I meant FSX but I guess you figured that out Smile

Yes, via free software add-ons such as SquawkBox or FSInn. These
products set up a local game server to which FS9/FSX connects, and
they then establish the connection with VATSIM (which uses a
proprietary network interface).

SquawkBox can be configured this way; I think it is true for FSInn,
too. It has the advantage of somewhat reducing the load on the FS PC,
which takes a hit on frame rates when these add-ons are running.

The last time I used Gamespy was 8-10 years ago. Since then I've seen it
included in some games I bought but it reminds me of spyware now. Try
Vatsim. To be honest, about all I have time for is single player so I
can't answer the questions you have.

Thanks for answer Smile

And then voice (headset) must be connected to Laptop, not PC. Am I right?

The headset must be connected to whichever computer is running MSFS.

I can't answer all of the questions but here are my experiences with
multiplayer FSX over a LAN.
I hosted the session, friend joined. We had both installed the chinook
from Avsim and we both saw each others aircraft correctly. (I forgot to
try and use an aircraft he didn't have installed. OTHER online games
resolve this problem by serving the missing files to the joining player,
but whether FSX is that advanced is yet to be seen.)
Autogen scenery appears differently on each machine as is to be expected
(infact my friend has addon high res scenery).
If the host of the session crashes their aircraft. When they 'respawn'
(sorry, gamer terminology), there seems to be a bug in that the other
players can no longer see their aircraft. If the other players exit and
re enter the session, this is reset. This only appears to happen to the
host, not the joinees.
No AI atc, I expect this is to make use of the multiplayer atc function.
Only basic animations will show across the LAN (Gear up/down) doors
opening do not display over the network.
