In the original D&D (red basic books, blue expert book), when killing a mage
my DM is under the impression that you get whatever XP the mage would have
required to reach his level (i.e. 25000 etc).

I am positive that when I read through the rules for my own campaign I found
specific rules relating to the XP gained from killing a mage.

Unfortunately my original rules were lost so when I found them cheap on ebay
I purchased them but I cannot find the above entry anywhere.

Was I imagining it and what is the real rule for the original D&D?

Many thanks,

Moo

It's been a long time since I've even owned Basic, but as I recall XP
for kills was quite simple - there was a table based on HD, and then
opponents with special powers had an asterisk or two - you got bonus XP
per asterisk. I'd say that the XP for a mage would based on his level
plus one asterisk's worth of bonus (for spellcasting).

O.O;

Why? Oh god, why?

You can get the 3.0PHP used for <$10 now, and that's all you need to
play 3.0. Why would you subject yourself to 1stEd torment?

Hehe, not even 1e. It's basic! But you really need a DMG for the DM
as well for at least the xp tables. You can get by with 1 PHB, and 1
DMG for a group for the xp tables, and everyone else can use the SRD
for everything besides xp.

Perhaps they want a simpler game. But they could go with one of the
d20 lite games (there's at least one out there that's downloadable for
free), which have far less rules, yet have many of the improvements of
the last 30 years.

You haven't described the original, but the BXCMI boxed sets, the
3rd revision of classic DnD (AKA 3rd edition of Basic DnD, AKA BDnD) and
contemporary to 1st edition ADnD.

He's misread the rule.

Text from the Rules Cyclopedia, which should be identical but I'm
too lazy to check. Original emphasis.

"Any creature able to cast spells gains one asterisk for each two spell
levels that it can memorize (round up; a magic-user who can memorize up
to 3rd level spells gets 2 asterisks). /A spellcaster's experience level
is used for the calculation, instead of his or her Hit Dice/."

Experience Level is referred to because player character classes
stop gaining HD past name level, so your looking up their level rather
than their HD on the HD table.
A 21st level mage (with 9th level spells) should earn you 12500 XP,
plus additional stars at 2000 XP each from attacking magic items he uses
(or defensive items that have substantial effect), plus 1 XP per gp of
treasure he had, plus any additional rewards as the DM sees fit. He
still only has 9 Hit Dice.

Because it is what we always played 10 years back in college. AD&D was
complicated for our drunken states! We've adapted it slightly over the
years to make it better but why change what isn't broken?

Which would you rather drive, a 2005 Mazda Miata or a 1967 Mustang?

Kinda the same idea with the Old Gamer, s/he will want to hang onto it for
nostalgia or comfort.

Uh... the example that you used is entirely inaccurate.

It's more like a 2006 (fuel cell powered) Mustang, and a 1960's
Volkswagen Bug.

One is cleaner, sleeker and not only gets more miles to the gallon, but
has greater power to boot, the other is a clunky antique that now only
hippies and volkswagen fanatics drive. Yea, it was hot stuff in the
60's. It's not the 60's anymore. Razz
