After watching "The King of Kong" I got nostalgic and downloaded
MAME32 and a bunch of ROMs. I ended up deleting two thirds of them
because I remembered all too quickly how much I hated them. However,
a couple of questions remain:

1. Has anyone ever come across sound samples available for "Wizard of
Wor?" I LOVED this game and still do, and would dearly love to hear
the wizard taunt me again in his archaic 8-bit voice.

2. Is it common for some games to not function when you first run the
self test but will work the next time you run MAME (had this happen
with Joust)?

3. What simple USB joystick would people recommend for games where
you can rove all over the screen (specifically vertical and side-
scrolling shooters like Sidearms and R-Type?

4. Some line games like Star Castle won't display properly due to (I
THINK) my current screen resolution, which is 1280 x 1024. Is there
another setting I can change to which may help with this?

5. Also, many vertical games have a large section of the bottom of
the screen cut off so that I cannot see my avatar (Centipede, for
example). What can I try to fix this?

Thanks very much in advance for your advice!

If not found yet, I got it and can email it.

Yes, I think is this the natural behavior of certain Williams
games. Defender and Stargate do this too. So properly emulated.

Trying to force a certain resolution to the games in question.

Common? No. Joust - yes. IIUC, some games require the non-volatile RAM to be
initialised before they run properly. Hence the need to run them the 1st
time. I think most of the Williams games do that.

Simple? You can't go past the X-Arcade stick for that arcade experience,
particularly with the shooters. Anything less isn't doing them justice.
IMHO, using a "gamepad" for these games is sacrilege - you may as well be
playing them on your mobile phone!

Ginormous thank you's for the link!! Now I can play Wizard Of Wor
exactly like it used to be!

I'm also jazzed to know that some of the games I deleted can be had
again as I just need to run them once and restart so they will
actually work.

Thanks for the tip on the X-Arcade stick, I'll be researching that
this weekend.

You can actually just press the service switch (F2) instead of restarting
when that screen comes up.
