The playlist. I have hundreds of tiny sound files, all organized in
trees like "Genres" --> "Background" --> "Spooky/Undead" --> "Arcanum"
--> "Graveyard"

Without looking in my world music book, what comes to mind is that
Franz Liszt collected an impressive collection of folk music, in order
to preserve it. He probably scored/adapted some of the material. If so,
there are bound to be recordings available.

Move a little north/northwest of that region, and you find Bederik
Smetana (can't place the accent marks correctly, sorry), the father of
Czech nationalist music. He wrote my all-time favorite piece of music
of any genre, called The Moldau. I'll bet someone out there is familiar
with it. It's a musical representation of a journey from the source to
the mouth of a river in his homeland. There are several different
performances recorded of this work. It's part of a collection called Ma
Vlast ("My Fatherland"), which includes another number called The High
Castle. The Moldau might serve well as traveling music, especially if
along a river, where here and there are various activities and sights.

Enjoy,
Eric

Here's a couple of ideas. I've not tried these myself, but maybe
they'll work for you.

1. In iTunes, under the "File" menu, there's a back up to disc option
that lets you choose to save both the files AND the playlists if you
want. If you've got a DVD burner, it should take fewer discs than a CD
burner to make the backup, and it should always stay organized; if
they're tiny files, it should not require a bunch of space, either. I
haven't tried this myself because I only have a CD burner and I have
about 7.5 days worth of music in iTunes right now, which would take
quite a few CDs to back up.

2. In the iTunes preferences, there's a "Sharing" tab that lets you
share your library on your local network, and that gives you the option
to share either your entire library or selected playlists. I don't have
more than one computer on my local network, so I can't see if this
option does what you want or not. But it's something you can try.

At 4 gigs, you might be able to burn that to a DVD.

That much on a DVD? Holy Crack! How much data can a DVD hold?

Unless I miss my guess, a DVD holds 4.74 GB of data normally.

Beats the heck out of 640MB for a CD. I was unaware...but the storage
implications...most impressive!

Thanks,
Eric

Hm... After March ends, I'll have a little more time on my hands.
Jasin, remind me on April 1st or so and I'll try to see if I can do this
and send it to you.

D'You think the compilation could be merged with an already existing
iPod collection?

It's a lot of fun for when I'm PLAYING, more so than when I'm DMing. As
a DM I tend to rely a lot on premade playlists, as a player I have time
to quickly search for and play relevant quips. For example, a PC falls
100' and I quickly play the Tick (from the animated series) with the air
whistling by as he says "Ah, I'll just bounce off of that... broad,
flat surface..." And of course for Illithids there's always
Thrakerzog's tongue taunting, "We're gonna eat your brai-ain!"

Sometimes I go to some lengths to get a particular quote... And many
have purely sentimental value for our gaming group. But I think many of
them would be useful for any group, and the music collection itself is
(I think) pretty impressive. Lots of stuff you just can't find on
iTunes, you know. Think "entire soundtracks to video games".

What I'd love to get is the weaselly character from Miller's Crossing
begging, "Look into ya *heart*!" How often does THAT come up? Haven't
rented the DVD yet. Also looking forward to Billy and Mandy finally
getting onto DVD because that show is a gold mine of D&D quips.

You can certainly do that with individual clips, but I've never tried to
do it with a whole playlist. I'll see if I can make an experiment with
that.
