Got a question about this great movie, couldn't find a satisfactory answer
on the net.

Spoiler Space if you haven't watched it!

Why the hell did Wash die?! Did he want to leave any potential future series
(any news on that? Is there going to be a season two?), did Wheadon not like
him? Ah man, what a bitch of a thing to do!

I concur. Great movie. I assume Wash is the "I'm a leaf in the wind"
guy. I thought his death was unexpected and just the right thing for
the director to do since he was about to put the rest of the cast in
harm's way. Without that death you get a feeling that everything will
turn out ok for the main characters. I was on the edge of my seat
after his death because all bets were off and I didn't want to see
anymore of the characters die.

I suspect that if the series had been resurrected, they would take
place before the movie's events. It's not just Wash that died, after
all, and I can't imagine Firefly without the other one that died...

Wash's death was absolutely brilliant. I mean, ofcourse I'll miss him,
and he was one of my favourite characters in the series, but because
of his death, anyone could die. Everyone could die. It made the end
much more tense and believable. Usually in movies, you know the heroes
will survive. Not this time.

Personally, I think Zoe would have been a better candidate for an
unexpected death. On one hand, it'd be much more dramatic because
she's not just Wash's wife, but also Mal's war buddy, and on the
other hand I feel she's less necessary than Wash; he added a unique
perspective: humor, humanity, he always knew how to put things in
perspective. Perhaps he was less of that world and more of ours.
But now he's dead, and the series, if it ever gets resurrected, won't
be the same without him.

I suppose. But I saw the movie before I ever saw the show, and I thought it
was great. However, I was lucky enough to see it in a movied theater
COMPLETELY ALONE. I mean, there was NOBODY in the place but me. I felt like
Howard Hughes or something. One of the most interesting and arresting movie
experiences of my life.

A lot of it is just the "This ain't Hollywood" thinking that pervades
the series and most of what Joss Whedon does.
The man loves to stand the expected on it's ear - just look at the end
of "The Train Job" - any other series the big bad tattooed dude would
have been the season long villain.

I wouldn't have said it was for that reason, after all Kaylee isn't any
good in a fight either.
Wash could have pointed a gun as well as she could, better probably
considering her ability shown in "War Stories".

I'd say it was him because his death was a) possible without killing
anyone else, and b) far more hard hitting because he was the hero of the
moment having managed to land them safely (mostly) after one hell of a
job of flying.

It's not "fair" for him to die having just saved them all, so it has the
most impact.

It also made you pretty sure that River was going to die too when she
ran out, tossed the med pack in and sealed the door.

I watched it in a rather crowded theatre with Nathan Fillion doing an
intro before the movie, and watching the audience's reaction to Wash'
death during the movie. Rather a special experience, but the fact that
I'd never been to a premiere before may also have something to do with
it.

Still he did it in a completely unrealistic way in my eyes which rather
brought me into the mood that from now on, everything might be as stupid
or illogical which really was a shame. I mean that cockpit window survived
a space fight and a crash landing and then could be that easily broken?

I can watch DVDs without a television. Hint: I'm using a device that
can do this at this very moment. Smile
