So all this time I was thinking that you only had to save up 9g for a
mount, but I didn't realize you needed an extra 81g to train for it!
This leads me to a few questions:

1. Do you *have* to spend the extra money to train? My guess is yes,
otherwise you can't ride it.

2. Is it possible to train above Apprentice status?

3. If so, what benefits does this give? And is it worth it to do so, or
is it a waste since you will eventually get an epic mount? (Or do a lot
of people not get epic mounts because of the cost?)

Thanks.

PV is right. I'm going to expound what he said a bit

There are 4 levels of mount riding,
Skill level 75, 150, 225, and 300

At 75 it grants you the ability to ride the mounts that travel at 60%
of your run speed.
At 150 it grants you the ability to ride mounts that travel at 100% of
your run speed
At 225 it grants you the ability to ride flying mounts that travel at
60% run speed and fly at 60% of your run speed
At 300 it grants you the ability to ride flying mounts that travel at
100% run speed and fly at 280% of your run speed

Skill level
75 is available at level 40
150 is available at level 60
225 is available at level 70
300 is available at level 70

Ah, so there aren't separate apprentice/journeyman/expert/artisan levels
for the normal mount and the epic mount? They are combined together?

If I'm understanding this right, then apprentice training lets you ride
a regular mount at 40, and you can't train to journeyman until level 60?
But to train journeyman do you need an epic mount?

I guess I'm getting a little confused about what kind of overlap there
is between the regular and epic mounts and the difference ranks of
training for each.

Correct.

Yes, at 60, and then again at 70. You need the skill for epic mounts and
flying mounts respectively.

The extra speed is very useful when farming. A few classes (druids,
shamans, hunters) have travel forms which help a bit, but you're still
faster on a mount. *

Whoops I should have said X% more than your run speed. Sad

Apprentice = skill 75 = regular mount = lvl 40 = 90g
Journeyman = skill 150 = epic mount = lvl 60 = 900g*
Expert = skill 225 = flying mount = lvl 70 = 900g
Artisan = skill 300 = epic flying mount = lvl 70 = 5000g

Basically the different levels are what allows you to ride each mount
- you can't ride a regular mount without having bought apprentice
riding, you can't ride an epic mount without buying journeyman riding,
etc etc.

*the price for journeyman riding might rdeuce when TBC comes, it's
currently 600g on the beta server.

Btw all the prices I've listed don't include discounts, so remove 10%
if you're honoured with the faction you're buying from.

Ah, perfectly clear now! So as far as I'm concerned right now, it will
stop with apprentice training! I can't even imagine 90g at this point,
let alone 900, but I guess I'll see how it goes when I get to 40.

Thanks!

Hehe the amounts aren't so scary when you get higher level Smile 900g is
quite a grind, I've got two characters who need epic mounts currently
(one's been 60 a while, another is approaching 60), and it's not easy
to get that much, but not impossible either, I'm up to 700g on the lvl
60 and 200 on the lvl 53 (with items which I'm hoping are worth at
least another 200g in the bank to sell), plus if the price does indeed
get lowered it'll be easier.

And earning money in TBC will be easy, believe me - I transferred to
the beta server with no more than 600g in hand, but now have 1200,
despite having spent quite a lot - with concentration on saving it'll
be easy to make the money to get up to expert riding skill, and the
5000g for artisan will be a similar challenge to the current 900g for
journeyman; that is challenging but not impossible Smile

Just nitpicking a bit, but it's actually 160% (a 60% increase) percent
of your running speed at 75. If it were 60% you would actually be slower
on your mount.

And more if you get to PvP Rank 3 before you buy if it's still the same
after the honour change.

Didn't somebody post in here about gold being more plentiful during beta
tests, because Blizzard wants the volunteer testers to progress fast
through the game? If so, gold gain in non-beta TBC will not be as easy
as you claim.

That's a good question. Anyone know?

As Catriona points out, there is no reason to suggest that the epic
flying mount will be any harder to obtain than the epic riding mount
during the early days of release.

This doesn't mean it will be easy as money was scarce during those days
-- but eventually everyone who cared to get one, got one.

I think the misconception here is that you "need" an epic flying mount
and people are upset over how expensive it is. There's always the
discount alternative which I think is just as functional for the people
who can't afford the epic one *now*

Druids and mounts at lvl 40 - Do most druids get a mount at level 40? I ask because Travel Form gives + 40% speed and cat form is not far off that. Does a mount at level 40 give +60%? The ones I've followed while I've been in travel form don't usually appear to go appreciably faster...

Epic Mounts? - I'm pretty close to 900g. Before level 60, I didn't figure I would buy an epic mount. A lot of gold for the speed increase. Unlike the 72g at level 40. Now I'm debating whether to buy one or not. Are they really worth it?
