Well you see the guys I game with are fond of Warhammer Quest. I like
it for about half and hour and then I find myself wishing I wasn't
driving so I could drink myself insensible.
So I figured I'd use d20 modern and the scenery, tiles, and miniatures
we have and make an episodic skirmish game using full RPG combat rules.
Urban Arcana with tooled up fantasy monsters is one of the basic
settings, as is Shadow Chaser (think Buffy). Fits perfectly with a
diverse mini collection. Structuring your game so it runs like the
average geek TV series makes it fit into an ad hoc gaming session of 2-5
hours.
So for example the first game will see a bunch of Heroes with the
occupation students working at a Wild West theme park.
So obviously we can use Foundry Cowboys of which we're well supplied. I
can by some of Eric Hotz's White Wash city buildings
http://www.erichotz.com/whitewash.html for scenery.
Each player can pick a mini and a Hero I've prepared earlier. Each hero
will have a list of some things they know that comes with it.
They'll start on the far table edge to the gate. (They’re packing up)
Then I’m think a few Zombies appear. They have to fight them with
improvised weapons.
After that combat they can make a choice of running for the gate in
which case it will be a big zombie bash, or to investigate which will
lead to being able to overcome a couple of noncombat challenges such as
finding ammo for their guns, then a couple of small combats followed by
a boss monster.
Next game could be going out to an Uncle’s farm to investigate some
missing stock. Is it rustlers? Well yes but they’re a small tribe of
Goblins that has slipped through to the world and tooled themselves up
with shotguns etc (w00t a job for me old Grots).
People can either just start again as a new generic hero each time, or
they can choose to progress their Hero, and we can move on to using
gnarly minis like Foundary’s street violence range, or Mind Flayers.
And who doesn’t love putting a Mind Flayer down on the table. That's
all good for single high value villians, but I though I might be able to
get some good rent a violence mobs out of the GW plastics.
