Ouch... but fair.

You'll only get a 4th level buddy, so you'll need something like a
Dwarf Fighter, 20 Con, 12 Dex, full plate and tower shield, dwarf waraxe
specialist.
I don't think you can easily differentiate Dwarf Fighters from attack
dogs at the best of times, so that should work.

Heh, I've played that guy as a PC. At least I'd know just how
he works. Not that there's any particular mystery there.
Not point buy, randomly rolled attributes, but I do have a 17
to stick into Con.

No love for the orc barbarian? I was thinking one might work,
both in feel and mechanics. It's very much the "attack dog",
and it seems likely to hit hard and be fairly tough. Fast
is nice too, as I might have him serve as tactical transport
for my lil' halfling PC sometimes.

Ah, I thought there was something like that, I just didn't find it
looking in the SRD. That pretty much fixes it.

+1 at 4th level. Super.

Get a warpony too, and bring some spares. I don't think you'll match
the Dwarf tank for staying power, and at 4th level that'll be the biggest
issue for anyone you're throwing up front. Still, I guess the Druid,
Ranger, and other pets will all be 30+, so you might want to give him
some Longstrider.
OTOH, you don't have to outrun the monsters, ....

I've done it IMC.
'Tanya' was a baby storm dragon with Rogue levels (they suited her
personality *way* too well). No balance problems.

Um, yeah. Something's wrong there. Warblades should be able to lay
smack down in disgusting amounts.
