It seems like none of the recent games (in the last year) except John
Dondzilla's Space Fury has had a sub-$20 version, which was one of my
favorite parts of the "old school" (pre-2003) vectrex devel scene.

I know a lot of these games are of the "100 made ever, pre-order now"
variety so I'm just curious which ones, if any, might hit the bargain
bin prices at some point, in some form (ie in collection format maybe?
So as to make it a distinct item from the collectable form ala
Protector/Yasi)

Don't take this as a criticism of current pricing, it's a legitimate
question.

Star Sling is $20 below $20. It's a FREE download for the Freeware
edition
or if you need a PCB version the Turbo version is 14.73 USD. It is 100%
oldschool in every way! Wink

Agreed. Authors are under no obligation to release a free or low cost
version of their games ao I take whatever is out there as a generous
gift and leave it at that.

It took about 8 months for Proector to be released as a low cost
version. Alex could have released YASI in a limited edition like
Protector and it would have sold out -- but almost every homebrew
author I know speaks of the PITA it is to assemble and ship all the
pieces for a limited edition. Martijn contracted out that job, Manu
made only 13 limited carts and found that to be a royal pain. Alex
Herbert I think has stated that making the 100 copies of Protector was
like pulling teeth.

So I was quite surpised to see YASI released WITH Protector in the same
cart for a low price, but I think I understand the reasons for it.

I like George's idea of a standard packaging (like Alex N's) that can
be customised to have a slip cover, overlay, wraparound labels, etc.
This helps keep costs down and homebrewers dont have to reinvent the
wheel when they want to do more fancy packaging for limited editions.

It is a good question.

War of the Robots...2 free download versions available from my site
I, Cyborg...still available for purchase at a reasonable $30
Vector 21...still available for purchase at a very reasonable $21
3D Lord of the Robots..in pre-order status, special box, etc $50
shipped

As of today, only War of the Robots has sold out.
That's not to guarantee that upon selling a title out
that a free download will follow, but it certainly
would be at that point that a decision like that
would be made. I can tell you now that I, Cyborg
will probably not be released as freeware, and there
are still over 70 cartridges available for purchase.

One thing that must be kept in mind is that the
very last thing I want to do is piss off my paying
customers by dumping the game for free after
it sells out. I did it with WOTR mainly to put
out a version that had a lower difficulty setting
(via the cheats that exist in the freeware versions).

As for lower priced Mark Shaker versions, it's
certainly an option that I will consider, but again,
not until after the initial versions sell out through
FURY.

How about www.VectrexCarts.com? Several sub $20 carts exist there. After
the initial period of a release we generally get the author's ok to
replicate the games or at least the binary to be able to load in into our
own carts of one type or another.

Like a movie to the home market all that is required is patience if just
want to play the game and do not care about the packaging. I do grant that
sometime the wait is a llooonngg time.

I haven't been able to get my data io 29B working yet, and I'm missing
the pod to do 28 pin devices anyway so I can't do any burning of eproms
