If I give him my log-in and password. Sorry, but I find this ownership of a
game I've paid money to own issue a bit confusing.

There are two instances where that could work.
1: If only one of you is connected to the internet at a time. Eg: you
unplug your LAN/cable/dialup wire and start steam in offline mode and
play to your heart's content (for up to 30 days IIRC) and your friend
connects in online mode, or vice versa.

2: if you register Ep. 1 under a different steam account (which I didn't
bother doing, but I think is possible)

I think those are the only ways, but I'm sure the collective wisdom of
the ether will lambast me if I'm wrong. Wink

I wouldn't do that if I were you. The problem is, if he's logged in to
your Steam account, then you won't be able to log in at the same time,
so you'd effectively be locked out of your games until he disconnected.

You could let him use it in offline mode, but if his computer has a net
connection, then it will login automatically (Blocking Steam with a
firewall usually doesn't work either, it is known to cause Steam to hang
rather than allow offline mode)

Really? I found it pretty simple. All your games are on your account. You
can access your account from any PC but only one PC at a time.

Remember you don't own the game. You purchased a liscense to install and
play the game.
