Alright, recently I've had a bit of a change of heart and kind of *want*
to do some instances now. I realize I'm missing out on some unique and
interesting areas if I don't see them at least once. But it seems no
matter what, I can't get away from what I hate most:

RFC: I had heard it was fairly linear, short, and easy. No problem. So I
use the LFM tool and end up with a group of four. One guy really sounds
like he knows what he's doing. He asks to join the group, he gets a
friend to fill out the fourth role, etc. So we start and things are
going good. I share the quests that I can (admittedly for mostly selfish
reasons, so they will want to do them too!) and we proceed. Well, no
sooner than we finish one of the quest objectives does this guy suddenly
throw out a "gtg". The rest of us decide to keep going, because really
it isn't that hard and we have a boss to kill. Well, when we get to that
boss another guy goes "I gtg after this boss". ::sigh:: As it turns
out, that was the last thing we all needed anyway, so maybe that's why
he decided to leave at that point, but still....

WC: Had 4 quests and someone shared another one with me. Before we enter
the instance, this group is so disorganized that we aren't even staying
together. They kill the guy who has the 99-year old port but I'm not
near it, so I can't loot it! Then there's talk of doing another quest
"on the way out"...Well, we go through and I get a couple quests done,
then out of nowhere someone gives the fantastic "gtg" (I mean really, we
didn't even finish the big quest that *all* of us were doing, including
him! the one about getting 4 gems...unless that's just a shaman quest?)
Well, once he says this, someone else also says "gtg" so that's pretty
much the end of that. Luckily one guy offered to help me do the port
quest on the way out, and then I stuck around (very carefully!) and
finished gathering serpentbloom on my own (well, with the help of some
other people clearing the way).

On the bright side, the warlock had stored my soul and we had a complete
wipe, so I waited for the mobs to leave and then I came back and res'ed
everyone. That was pretty amazing. I really love shamans. I think the
only thing we can't do is buff other party members (but of course our
totems are basically that)

Ah well, PUGs just aren't the greatest, and I guess I'll either have to
join a guild or just stop complaining....I still have a couple things to
do in WC. I'm sure people run through instances billions of times, but I
just really hate the thought of having to do it all again, and probably
having to help do all those same quests again for other people....

Yeah I hate the g2g in the middle of a two hour instance. Even in the
newer shorter 1 hour branches it makes me want to kick when people say
"g2g 15min dinner"... DUDE! You know this instance takes an hour, you
know damn well you're hungry and mom or girlfriend or pizza guy will
be there in 15min. Why even bother to sign up and then make me bend
backwards to get another person.

The worst is when its a tank or healer class. That usually ends in a
group disband.

I've got a bigger horror story.

a good 10 hours in Sunken Temple trying to do both the avatar quest,
the warlock quest, AND the priest quest.

Me and my girlfriend stuck through it to the end but we went through a
good 8 tanks, 4 mages, several shaman and a couple hunters. This was
all just clearing out the top corridors. Finally we both got fed up
and called her sister and her boyfriend who where 60 and they
recruited another 60 mage and we tore through it without much issue
after that.

Half of the people that left got three kills in and said "g2g" and
some other lame excuse.

This is a 50+ instance. You would think people would be a bit more
dedicated to get it done.

It's real life. It interferes. While sometimes gtg is a translation for
"I've finished what *I* needed to do and see no point in hanging out with
you guys", in my experience it usually means parents/pets/children/food etc.
are calling and can't be put off any more.

WoW is nice, in that most instances don't require a herculean effort or
amount of time. And, most members of your average instance group can be
replaced (unlike other games, like FFXI, where finding a party itself could
take hours, and leaving before a few hours of game play would get you
blacklisted).

Most people don't take the low level instances seriously, so you'll
tend to find this much more often than high level instances.

With high level instances, people are much more serious about getting
their end-game gear and will be less likely to walk away.

Yeah, I swear the whole thing respawned a few times. We'd go out,
summon the next person to us (pre tbc so my lock was the taxi) come
back in, clear some trash then the next person would say "gotta go"
and take off. I'm suprised both her and I said screw it and gave up.
In the end we got at least a full level and then some.

Snort - it was a feral druid in my case. The guardian just kept wandering
around talking while I was dead - I would get back to my corpse and then
ride around until I started seeing her messages in the chat log. I was
killed twice, but still finished the quest. *

Two people leaving in the middle of RFC?? That's just
wierd. It only takes an hour for the whole thing with
a decent group. Of course, newbies may not know that.
But I seriously suspect that a lot of people just
don't think ahead.

Also a lot of people offer to join, or add themselves
to LFG/LFM, without being ready. I always make sure
my bags are empty and that I'm near the instance.
And I still have to wait a half hour for everyone
else to finish up what they're doing. OK, some
people need to be summoned, that's fine. But why
is there always one player who's in the middle of
combat in some distant area when he joins the group?
Then when he's summoned he's got to head to the
store to sell stuff.

A couple times I've been the only person at the
meeting stone and had 4 group members saying
"is someone going to summon me already?"

I understand the desire to get in a queue and then
go about business. But there should be some
limits. If you're waiting, then sell at the store,
work up trade skills, go fishing, etc. But
heading off into the wilderness to work on your
"kill 27 mottled blue furbolgs" quest is going
to annoy everyone waiting on you.

Advice might be to wait until the weekend and
play earlier in the day. More people logged in
to choose from, and fewer leet players who have
to leave and do homework.

I don't see how a guild would necessarily be better.
If you get the right guild, yes. But you may have
to go through tons of them before you find one.
And it will change over time.

Because this person isn't joining to do the full
instance. That person is joining in order to try
and get a little loot before leaving. They've
lost absolutely nothing by only playing for twenty
minutes, and probably walked away richer.
