I run with a latency of between 75 and 135 and I am running DSL Pro. When I
used to play Half-Life online, my ping was in the 30's and 40's. How can I
lower my ping?

Try different servers. Find one that is located close to you ping wise
(until they relocate servers between their data centers)
Full servers might have higher pings I guess because there is more
players to serve over the same connections. But you could always start a
night-elf or a Tauren or something and find a quiet place to compare
ping times of different servers.

I've got a DSL Pro connection and rarely dip below 100. On
weeknights/weekends between 200-300 is the norm -- no other traffic
than WoW, port forwarding on my router, etc.
WoW i believe carries alot more overhead than a twitch-response game
like an FPS. I doubt you'd notice any significant difference if you got
< 75ms. >> Stay informed about: How can I improve my ping? |

Ooooo, I disagree. On Kargath a latency of 700 will severly affect
your MC run. I expect the sweet spot is around 500ms. >> Stay informed about: How can I improve my ping? |

Hmm sounds kinda like saying my sports car is only doing 175mph, it
used to do 180-190. woe is me )
Your ping is OK, I am never below 200 and it is perfectly fine for
playing. even in instances. I am in the Uk and play on US servers so I
don't expect any lower. Even at 400-500 I don't notice any detrimental
effects on the gameplay. Only when it gets over 1000 do I start
thinking something is happening

In FPS you also get to choose your server, and most people choose
dedicated servers close to them with the lowest hops and ping. The
network routes to that server also serves a smaller number of people.
In WoW, you don't usually get to pick the physical proximity of the
server as much and Blizard uses server farms -- and the network traffic
might just be a lot.
In other words, I don't know ;D >> Stay informed about: How can I improve my ping? |

In Europe there are at least two different data centers though. The site
is down atm, but otherwise I could probably look up a forum message with
them stating such a thing.
They were moving some realms to another data center and everything on
that data center could expect downtime because of that IIRC.

Yeah, that's not network lag. In my experience low frames per second
causes the choppy effect and is not related to ping times. Sunday and
Monday of this week I had terrible lag but I still had very good frame
rates. The network lag problem showed itself by instant abilities
taking a long time to cast and running through an area which should
have loads of mobs but was empty. When lag resolved itself I had
evidence of mobs hitting me in my combat log but I hadn't seen them.

Wow, i can't imagine running Wow on that setup to be honest.
Order of upgrade:
- RAM
- Vid card
- CPU/Motherboard
Frankly i'd replace the motherboard and CPU as its getting a bit long
in the tooth, and you don't want to throw 'good money after bad'. But i
realise a complete computer replacement isn't always practical, so...
If you're going to stick with your PC, get:
- 1gb RAM (probably means replacing your old ram completely)
- Get a 6x00 series Nvidia or ATI X800XL for AGP (i'm assuming your
board is AGP). I have the later and its one of the best
price/performance cards available right now...more than adequate for
WoW @ 1280x1024.
note: 512mb is the minimum recommended to run WinXP optimally. Add WoW
ontop of base WinXP and you really should be looking at 1gb. >> Stay informed about: How can I improve my ping? |

Well, in that case, the question changes to 'How can I improve my frames
per second?' I know that I need more ram, but I also have a fairly nice
vid card. I am running a 256mg Nvidia Geforce FX 5500. I have a 1.7ghz P4
running at 200mhz fsb. I am running 384 megs of ram(I know, I know, need
512) and I am running winxp pro.
