Don't install it - stick to XP.

If you get a hacked version then you can't get any of the security updates
or other updates. There are hacked versions of XP out there but due to the
system identification requirement for updates, including basic stuff like
DirectX, machines with the hacked/pirated version can't access the updates
as they will be identified as not original.

As for Linux, I've heard it's great, way faster than Windoze (yes, I spelled
that correctly!). I'm just not au fait with using Linux and wouldn't dare
install it on my "main" machine unless I really knew what I was doing. Plus
a lot of off-the-shelf programmes don't run in Linux and you have to go to a
fair bit of trouble to get them to run. I guess there's a whole community
out there working to make Linux run these programmes but I'm just not enough
of a geek to go to the trouble. I'd love to get rid of M$ on my machine,
though, and thumb my nose at them...

Dell sounds pretty proprietary. When you bought your PC they should have
given you an XP disk - after all, you now own the machine and have licence
to use any of the software installed, so you should be able to re-install
Windows without having to go to Dell to do it. And before you run off
installing a bought non-Windows OS on your new PC, you should check with
Dell just how much of your machine they have locked up. You might find that
you are now in eternal servitude to Dell when it comes to upgrading and
updating your machine. Which is why I buy PCs from little computer stores,
where the owner builds it to my specs, I get disks for any of the software
installed and still end up paying less than I would getting the same thing
from Dell. And in Australia you have to pay a standard $99 delivery fee even
if you pick it up from them, no "delivery" involved!

Engram (as you can tell I'm not too impressed with Dell!)

To my knowledge XP has no limits on reinstalls, it just isn't feasible
considering the problems, I've seen people have with the verification
process, alone.
Take me, as an example, I installed XP about 3 years ago, now, and had to
authenticate.
I had to reinstall twice over the next 9 months after replacing the
motherboard and cpu after they were hit by lightening. Re-Authenticating
twice.
A couple months later the hard drive went bad, being in denial, I tried to
"fix" the drive and reinstalled xp again. Re-Authenticating again.
I was forced to admit defeat and installed an old back-up drive ...... and
of course reinstalled xp and Re-Authenticated.
A month later a got a shiny new 100gb hd and ...... reinstalled xp and
Re-Authenticated.
A couple months later my video card went bad, so I bought an ATI card .....
and Re-Authenticated
The ATI card was bad so I traded it in for a different ATI card (stupid
store only had ATI's in stock, I hate ATI's) ........ and Re-Authenticated.
That card was bad so I demanded a refund ..... got store credit instead ....
used for a new D:\ drive and got an inexpensive GeForce MX 420 somwhere else
...... and Re-Authenticated.
A year later I used some gift cards i was given and upgraded my video card
again ...and Re-Authenticated.
A couple months later I upgraded my cd-rw to a dvd-rw ...and
Re-Authenticated
and Re-Authenticated
and Re-Authenticated
and Re-Authenticated
and Re-Authenticated
Called Microsoft and had them walk me thru getting a clean Re-Authenticated
( corrupt aunthentication files were being reused by xp instead of being
replaced)
and Re-Authenticated twice more to finnish the proccess.

You see, unless you call microsoft and tell them , i doubt they can tell the
difference between that and Re-Authenticating because of hardware changes.
According to microsoft's help newsgroup, the only limitations are that you
need 1 license for each maching xp is on, and if you change more than 1/3 of
your machines hardware
over a 3 month period, then you'll have to Re-Authenticate by phone instead
of via the internet.

Microsoft can't limit the number of reinstalls, they'd have to much fallout
from such a tactic.
I had and used windows 95 for nearly 10 years. Well past the time microsoft
ceased to support it.
I used windows 98 for nearly 3 years after they ceased support for it.
The only downfall to doing so is that there were no more "bug" or "security"
fixes.

So feel free to use XP for another 20 years if it suites your needs. Smile

Dell will supply recover disks, for a fee, but other than that, dell
computers have a hidden partition with
with restoration info buried on it.
Which means that 1 little hdd crash can easily scratch your ability to
restore the system to the factory defaults,
unless you got a disk from them.

I'm planning on getting a new computer this year and I'm thinking I'll get
Windows Media Center Edition for an OS. I don't intend to ever get Vista! I
have 2 Dells and they both came with an XP disc. I didn't realize e-machines
were a Gateway product, but I've been looking at Gateway and HP for my new
system. While I haven't had any major problems with my Dells, I did hear
that their newer machines were more proprietary, so I won't be considering
them.

What difference will that make if you already own it? Didn't you just buy a
computer with XP on it? Did it come with a restore disk? I wouldn't worry
about it if it did. You're all set.

I've never heard of such a thing, orange. If you have XP on your computer
there is absolutely no need to upgrade to Vista unless you just want to.
I've reinstalled XP on this computer at least five or six times in the past
five years. I've never heard that it's only good for so many installs.
That's absurd. Eventually, I suppose software will change and begin to need
Vistas to run properly. Just as it's nearly impossible to buy new software
made to run on Windows 3.1 or 95. When and if that happens we'll all have
to upgrade if we want to use the new software, but I don't expect that to
happen for at least another 5 or 10 years.

This is not completely accurate; even if you have a hacked (or non
hacked but wrongly identified, which is very common; Microsoft's
homepage has an error rate of about 25% in missidentifying bought
non-hacked Windows XP as pirated) you will still access the IMPORTANT
updates (security updates) by enabling automatic updates. MS has
decided to let this because they do not want to be blamed for "letting"
viruses spread easily on Windows XP.
As for a "new" windows disc, that is not correct either; if your
Windows XP has been used too many times, you call MS, they give you a
new license# for free. You can reinstall it as much as you want.

Also, Windows XP will be supported to at least 2011, probably 2012;
it's Windows 2000 that will stop being supported by the end of 2008.
They will stop SELLING Windows XP this year.

I will not upgrade either, btw.

Exactly. Of course if you have a hacked version you can't do that, but
then I imagine they are hacked to allow unlimited installs, too.
(Personally I do not have that problem since I have a Corporate
license, which means it can be installed unlimited times, and no need
for activation).

OFB Bay windows?? - Has anybody been able to put something on or in them?? Betty

Cats and bay windows - buggy? - In my game, they seem to kinda get "stuck" there. They won't leave unless I have a sim try to do an interaction with them, at which point they jump down. (And the sim goes to the wrong side of the window).
