I read about putting on the sand/grass before priming a model. But if
you do that, do you paint the color on to the sand/grass after priming
it? Because it'll be black/white after being primed.
I wonder if you could have 2 different color schemes in one army.
I only have the Citadel Foundation Paints from the Citadel Hobby
Starter Set right now, if I want to paint additional colors, do I have
to purchase the Citadel Colors?
Did you go to a store and got help painting when the first time you
paint? Did you just take your models to the store totally unpainted
there or already base-coated?

Your answer is here:

When I started painting miniatures (I was 12), I just sort of placed
huge globs of Testors oil-based onto the mini, trying to target
specific areas with a given color.

Over time, I discovered the wonders of a fine-detail brush and learned
to be more accurate.

I always at least base-coat my minis before fielding them, and try to
have the primary faction color in place.

I personally do the base after I've finished the model. but putting
sand on the base before priming it and then painting the base another
color is perfectly acceptable. I personally would NOT suggest putting
static grass or flock on the base before priming however.

> I wonder if you could have 2 different color schemes in one army.

It depends on the army and what you want to do. I think it would be
perfectly fine if you were doing a space marine army and painted
squads as 2 or more different Chapters. They have a large fluff (back
story) basis for multiple Marine Chapters working together.

you do not have to purchase Citadel paints. Vallejo makes a nice line
of paints, as does Privateer (Warmachine) and Reaper. Citadel may be
the easiest for you to find and are perfectly fine paints for
beginners.

I did not when I first started painting. I did later when I decided
that I needed to up my game in that area.

most stores require models to be assmbled and at least primed. That
prevents someone from grabbing something off the shelf when no one is
looking, throwing it together and immediately adding it to their army.

Glue the sand to the base before priming, and glue the static grass to
the base after you're done painting the model.

That's probably the one I was looking for. Thanks, Rob.

Between the two articles, I think it's a good start.

I paint and varnish the figures and then do the groundwork.
For the latter I mix some cheap acrylic paint with thinned PVA (elmers)
glue.
Paint that on the base then sprinkle with sand.
Once that has dried I sometimes repeat depending on how it looks.
Dry.
Dry brush some lighter brown or fawn over.
Dob splodges of thinned PVA.
Dip in mixed flock - this is cork flock, the coloured bits rather than
static grass.
Dry.
Dob on patches of thinned PVA to parts of the flock.
Sprinkle on static grass on using tweezers.
Sometimes I then dry brush the tips of static grass ochre., once dry
obviously..

I often find spray priming to be something of a nuisance actually so I prime
by painting them.
Non ferrous primer ( the stuff you use on garage doors ) is cheap and
extremely robust for metals.
Or mix black primer with brown - usually raw umber.
Then I damp brush white to give a sort of sepia finish with the lo lights
very dark brown and the highlights white.

There's a painting guide on my site or you could google pre-shading.

> I wonder if you could have 2 different color schemes in one army.

You can have what you want.
Simple often looks best though.

I wouldn't
I use mainly liquitex art paints and very cheap art shop paints.

When I started painting nobody showed you anything in stores, GW didn't
exist.
Computers filled rooms....
Acrylics weren't available and you were advised to use humbrol enamel, oils
or gouache.

You had to find some old codger who would tell you some tips.
If you were lucky this was some demonstration at a wargames convention.
If not you had to put up with some old git going on about the good old days
inbetween puffing on his pipe and stroking his big beard.

Mind you.
Back then GW had not got everyone used to being spoon fed everything.

You're welcome.

I dunno if anyone told you this sometime in the last Millennium, but,
CapsLock is _not_ cruise-control for cool.

That said, we appreciate the enthusiasm.

I was gifted several hundred dollars in product way back in the day by
a couple store owners when I pointed out some of their glaring
security flaws.

Crud! My plan has been foiled. Like its that hard to just grab things off
the shelf and shove them in your baby's stroller at a GW store any way with
all the gamer kiddies screening you.

For your information I watched exactly two Super 14 games (live) and no
(that's zero) RWC games this season.

I did however watch a bunch of provincial (Air NZ cup).

The current set of rules and style of managing professional players makes
for a wholey boring game.
