in an attempt to work on a pcb i am trying to run that game in mame with a
missing prom (bin) file in the rom set .zip and i get an error from mame
saying that it is missing. is there a way to force mame to start a game
with a missing file in that rom set so i can see how the game would react
without it. I do remember at one point there was a way to force a game to
run with an incorrect checksum but i cant seem to find that option.

I am using mame0111b

What game are you trying to run?

i am trying to run winding heat. i know its a non working game in mame but
thats ok. with the complete rom set it dose boot to the rom check screen in
mame. and my pcb will not get that far. so the nonworking mame game is
more working than my pcb.

Games are "non-working" for a reason and there is nothing you can do to get
them to work.

Case closed.

Fake checksum ROMS have been around for sometime. If he can create a
file that matches what MAME wants it will load the ROM.

Well...MAME loads files by sha1 check as well....and I personally doubt
*he* is able to fake the SHA1 (even if rather fast SHA1 collision
algorithms were just published these days). Besides I don't see any
sense in making MAME load incomplete or bad sets....

Still doesn't help if the driver itself is incomplete, which I can't say for
sure is the case here.

I suppose if he wants to take a crack at the source to try and make it
work - he's more than happy to. Smile

An additional problem would be the unknown values a real board would 'find'
instead of the missing PROM values. Probably FF across the board, but I
wouldn't bet on it. Whether the PROM is executable code or just data would
make no difference here, as reading the wrong missing data could yield a
different result. If the Boot PROM is missing, it wouldn't make any
difference trying to emulate anyway...no Boot PROM, no anything except
maybe raster.
