Got a replacement PX6800 TDH card from Leadtek. Ran two tests - got the
nv4_disp error once. Will test more BUT
the freeze always seems to occur as I am descending for landing, sometimes
as late as almost over the threshold.
I seem to recall *something* about freezes as you approach the ground but
I've searched all my archives and can't find it. Does anyone recall anything
about that?
I'm not at the uninstall/reinstall FS9 stage ( *yet*) - so I'd like to
explore any avenues to clear up this issue prior to doing that.
I doubt that I could get *two* bad cards from Leadtek so I really have to
assume it's a problem with the nVidia drivers and my system. Next step is to
go back to the earliest nVidia driver that supports this card and start
there.

hey vic,
the only thing i can think of was the seasons crashing fs9.
but try this. after booting up fs9 go to settings/scenery library and run
the default scenery up to posistion one with your favorite flying areas to
follow that position.
may fix, may not. but simple enough to do.

I honestly don't believe that you have a bad card. 2in a row... Sounds like
a driver problem. Personally - I prefer ATi .

You are correct, jkb - definitely a driver issue. Did a LOT of research and
browsed around some various fora and found that literally thousands of
people have this problem - mainly with nVidia but is also occurs with ATI
but not as prevalent.
Seems that there is a timing register in the system R055 IIRC, that gets
overloaded with the new high speed graphics engines and doesn't refresh
properly. When that happens, endless loop and system freeze. Some mobo mfgrs
have made adjustments in the BIOS to compensate but not all.
I was able to download a registry hack that corrects the problem with the
register ( so it says ).
Installed same and, fingers crossed, so far so good. The flights I usually
try to cause the system to freeze all completed with no problems.
I shall wait and see.

Good for you. Let's hope this works. Sounds like the problem is fixed.

Hope you nailed it, new hardware equal BIOS and drivers tuning...
Could you please share a link to that registry mod?

So far so good Katy! - Tried various flights that usually freeze and haven't
had a single freeze. No negative impact whatever .
The mod can be found at:
http://www.synapse.gr/downloads/nv4loopfix.zip
and for general info, browsing around forums.nvidia.com and searching for
"nv4_disp" is a worthwhile effort.
Fingers still crossed but loosening <g>,

Now you need to hammer the motherboard manufacturer so that setting is
corrected in their BIOS/drivers... This is why I wait a bit before
adopting relatively new technology such as PCIex, thanks for finding
out the problems for me Enjoy!

Vic,
You may want to experiment with the Texture Bandwidth setting in FS9.CFG --
I believe 40 is MS default -- I'm at 80, some say 400. I had similar
problems as you (dump to desktop) caused by UTIL.DLL (microsoft library
code) -- this turned out to be the fault of a 3rd party add-on package (in
this case I think it was ActiveSky or FS Environment or possibly Flight1
727) -- check your Modules dir in FS9, you'll see a lot of 3rd party stuff
gets put there, some good, some not so good.
nVidia and ATI drivers are pretty stable for FS2004, they've long ago
covered the "issues"
Motherboard BIOS/Driver update is still a good idea regardless.

Hi Rob -
I subscribe to the " if it ain't broke, don't fix it school". FS9 has been
stable for me since day one - very few problems. I've moved it to several
different systems with no problems. This system worked flawlessly UNTIL the
new video card. The last thing I'd want to do is fiddle with stable settings
that have no bearing on the issue. The card and driver were the issue.
Also, just FYI, you might want to browse around the nVIdia forum to find out
just how stable these drivers aren't for some folks.
Bottom line - haven't had a problem since I used the 'fix' - I can live with
that.
Best,
