It's not Steam related as it is a very, very old bug, probably due to the
physics engine used

You can find similar problems in the source engine eg in Darm Messiah when
you're climbing ropes. If out of luck you fall through the level and out in
proxy space. You need to restart from last save in order to recover (or use
noclip if cheats is on)
