Hi,

Imagine : you're playing a boardgame with your buddy when he makes an
absolutely daft move which will ruin the game for the both of you.
This usually happens when you know the game pretty well but he's a
novice at it. What happens then (at least in my casa) is that you go
"hold it, are you *really* sure about that ?" and then you explain why
it's not such a good move and let him re-do it.

In PC games I've seen AI's do a similar thing a lot, but there's no
"hold it" button to click.

Then there's these times when you want to explore a particular
strategy, but the AI isn't co-operating - say you play the Allies in
WWII and you want to explore defensive strategies against a Sealion
but that daft German AI only thinks about Barbarossa and refuses to
cross the Channel.

What you could do is play a hotseat/network game all by yourself but
wouldn't it be nice if you - as the gamer - could intervene in the
AI's decision making process ?

What would be possible I think is letting the gamer select a few
strategy options. "Try a Sealion", "teach Franco a lesson and take
Gibraltar", "don't do a Barbarossa, wait for Stalin do DoW you". Or
for tactical games "only go for the biggest victory location", "ignore
casualties for this campaign game" etc.

What would be a lot harder would be the aforementioned "hold it"
button as it would require a UI to the entire AI "plan" but it's not
something which is impossible to do

So, question : is this something you'd like or not ?

Greetz,

Eddy Sterckx

As a scenario designer, I'd _love_ something like this. As a player,
I'm not sure I'd use it that much.

I *really* like having the option of changing control of a side during
the course of a game; e.g. changing the Axis side to human, moving a
few pieces and then turning it back to AI control before actually
ending the turn.

Or nearly achieving victory and then changing sides to see if I can
save the losing side's bacon.

Some games which allow this:
- GG's War in Russia/ Western Front/ Second Front
- Clash of Steel
- Hearts of Iron 2

I'm not sure how useful it would be for the average gamer to force the
AI into a certain strategy using options or triggers though. Not
really worth the programming time from a cost /benefit POV.

it sounds good.
maybe a button that would change the victory level for various locations
would do it.

I used to do that a lot in Clash of Steel. May have to go look it up at
Underdogs. It has been a while.

<unabashed plug mode>
That is also a feature in the HPS Squad Battles series, and I would assume
by extension the rest of the Tiller games.
