Try one of the Quake replacement engines. Here is a good one (for both
single-player and online): http://equake.quakeworld.nu/

I'm assuming that you are running the Dos version of Quake under
Windows XP.

The basic solution is to get WinQuake or GLQuake, alongside the 1.06
patch (if you don't have it already.) The better solution involves
the Quake Source ports - one was already recommended but there's plenty
to choose from.

Read the readme file included with WinQuake OR read the readme included with glQuake.

There is an updated version of glQuake out there called Fitzquake which is aimed at squashing the bugs in glQuake here: http://www.celephais.net/fitzquake/

Tenebrae is another version of the Quake engine you can use which has VERY heavily modified graphics which are supposed to look better, if you're really interested in better graphics try it out here: http://tenebrae.sourceforge.net/
You can find screenshots here: http://tenebrae.sourceforge.net/index.php?page=screenshots.txt

Just read the readme files that come with the software, they can probably explain how to do everything much better than someone here unless they are quoting from the readme.
