Hi Matt, Thanks for your input about your experience with Windows EXE with
T7G. I have a P4 AMD 2200 CPU so would be even faster.

Really? I played the Windows version on a PII 400 and it was fine. Not too
fast at all. My version was Win 95/98 only. No DOS version attached.

No, I didn't. Why would the game get harder just because your computer is
faster? . The solution is to create more blue blobs than green ones, so
wouldn't the solution be the same no matter what the computer speed? There
are no other puzzles in the game like the microscope puzzle, so I can't
compare. The game seems to run about the same speed as it did when I had a
slower computer and the blobs are created and re-created about the same as
before. Have you seen people mention that the microscope is harder to solve
with newer computers than with the ones in use at the time the game first
came out? The game originally only called for a 486 - 33 Mhz CPU and a
"Fast"16 bit video card with 1 MB memory.

Because of the way it's coded. The faster your computer is, the further
ahead the AI (artificial intelligence) looks before making its moves. The
more moves ahead the AI looks, the more it can predict what you might do
and come up with its own move to prevent you from achieving a successful
outcome.

For example, here is one solution, which only works on a 486/33

7 X X X X X X X
6 X X X X X X X
5 X X X X X X X
4 X X X X X X X
3 X X X X X X X
2 X X X X X X X
1 X X X X X X X

A B C D E F G

Follow the moves as listed, from-to, and you will finish with a
comfortable lead.

Move Ego Stauf
# (Blue) (Green)

1. G1-F1 G7-G6
2. G1-G2 G6-G5
3. G2-G3 G5-G4
4. G2-F4 G6-F5
5. G3-F3 F5-E4
6. F1-E3 G6-E5
7. G4-F6 F4-G4
8. G7-G6 F3-F2
9. E5-D4 F2-D3
10. E5-D5 D3-C4
11. E4-F2 E5-E4
12. F2-E2 C4-D2
13. F6-E6 E2-G2
14. D5-C4 D2-C3
15. D5-C5 F2-E2
16. C4-C2 E2-C4
17. D2-E2 G2-F1
18. D2-E1 C5-D6
19. A7-C6 E6-F7
20. D6-E7 C3-D1
21. D3-C3 A1-B1
22. D2-C1 A1-B2
23. C4-B3 A1-A2
24. C5-A3 E4-C5
25. E3-E4 C6-D7
26. B3-B4 C6-B5
27. A3-A4 C6-A5
28. D5-C6 A5-B7
29. D7-C7 A5-B6
30. A3-A5 B7-A6
31. A4-A3 B7-A7

The above solution is from here
http://www2.cheat-da-game.net/7th_guest/

31 moves total. There was another solution that worked on a faster
computer. That second solution worked on my PII 400. But it required
something like 15 more moves. I can't seem to find that solution on the
Internet anymore. It started out the same as the solution for the 486/33,
but the moves changed toward the end, and continued on for longer.

I would never have thought of that. I can't get that linked site you gave
me. I like to solve things on my own but not if its impossible or too
difficult for me. Then I get fed up and give up. It took me two months
before, so this time it could take me 2 years. You've burst my balloon Smile

I finally got that web page and it say in one part:

"Here is a winning game move listing for the Microscope Puzzle
in The 7th Guest. You will, perhaps, have to restart the puzzle
a few times before Stauf makes the correct opening moves. This
was just the game I recorded. After the first three moves have
been played as listed, the playing algorithm in the programming
will make sure that green keeps playing this game. I tested it,
and it happened on my computer (486DX/33)... and I am confident
that the program performs a best move search to a specified depth.
But I can not be absolutely sure, therfore it may play differently
on much slower or faster computers."

According to the above, the playing algorigthm in the programming will make
sure the green keeps playing the game, but that was on a 486X22 and the
Virgin Interactive guy solved the microscope puzzle and gives the solution
below, but a lot of people solved it. I solved it when using a 486, though
it could have been a 386DX.. I've upgradeed motherboards quite a few times..
I think I played it on either My P1 or P2. But as far as I remember, I
think I only did the microscope the one time and that was the first time. So
even when the game first cam out, the game is stacked against the game
player, but the game player can win, if they keep trying, but takes a long
time and many people probably gave up. Also, you can't save the game. In the
above paragraph he does say that the microscope may play differently on much
slower or faster computers. Since I am playing the game in Dosbox and using
Win 98, I wonder if that slows down my computer so there is more chance of
beating the microscope puzzle. If not, I may never be able to solve the
puzzle on my computer and I really don't want a cheat. I like to solve
things myself in a case like this where its you against the computer though
not if its not possible.
It took me two months to solve it before, but at that time, I knew it could
be solved, as others at the time had solved it. This time, I may never be
able to solve it. I don't think you need to solve the microscope puzzle to
finish the game.
