I guess I did a big no-no. I needed a good deal of space on my hd to
download and edit some home movies so I moved the whole Maxis folder to
an external hd. I wanted to keep it there and just play off of that,
but the play was terribly slow. SO, I just copied the Maxis folder
back to my main hd. Well now when I try to play I get the error "Could
not find The Sims data directory". I do use the Magic no-cd crack but
I saved the original exe and tried to use that but I get the same
error. I also tried to play the game still on the external hd but I
get the error there too. I'm about to pull my hair out!
If it comes to it I am ok to re-install it all, but how can I back up
all that I've done? I've got a few special houses and families and
quite a few donwloaded objects. Or can I just install over what is
there and have it replace the missing files (if that's the problem.)
ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated.

This may sound like a dumb question, but are you *sure* you copied it
back to the right folder on your main HD? If it's Win2k or WinXP, your
files should be in c:\documents and settings\(your username)\my
documents\EA Games\The Sims 2. (I'm assuming you're playing Sims2 and
not the original game? And that you used the default location for the
data files.)
I've installed the game on several PCs now, and just always copied my
data files over without a problem. For example, when I first got the
game I had a laptop that barely met the specs. Then got a new laptop,
installed the game, and copied the My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2
stuff right over the top of the new installation. All my families and
neighborhoods and downloads were just like normal. Then I killed that
laptop (don't ask), got another one, installed the game, copied my
backed-up files over and again everything worked just like normal.
My point here is that I don't think you need to reinstall, but if you
do, you should be able to copy the files from your external HD right
over the new installation and have all your families and stuff back. I
also did the same thing with the original Sims game when I upgraded hard
drives, but I don't remember where the folders are supposed to go.
Good luck!

I think she's got Sims1. She mentions using the Magic no-CD crack. I wish
I could help her but it's been so long since I played Sims1 I can't remember
where things were kept now!

I wasn't sure which version that no-CD was for. Darn, I thought I might
have had Sims1 still installed on my desktop machine but I just checked
and it's not there. Sorry Bethany

I have it! On an old laptop which I attempted to install Sim2 on but it
crashes on loading, so I kept Sims1
The files are in C:\Program Files\Maxis. I have folders there for Creator
aand HomeCrafter and Facelift but the the one that will have all the date in
it is The Sims. In that foder there are several data files.

If it's Sims 1 everything will be in the folder where the game itself is installed. Most
of your downloads will be in the download folder or in gamedata\userobjects. Any skins
will be in the gamedata\skins folder or in the ExpansionShared\Skinsbuy folder. You may
also have things in the gamedata\floors,walls and roof folders.
Your family and houses and save-games are in the Userdata folders.
If the game cannot find the data directory something has most likely gone wrong in the
registry. To reinstall, simply copy everything in the Sims folder somewhere safe then
reinstall. The Sims 1 doesn't use any other folders than the ones the game are installed
in.
If it's sims 2, the data directory is in My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2. >> Stay informed about: Please help! "Could not find The Sims data directory" error. |

Oh, good. I was going to install the old game to find the locations for
her, but as usual work is consuming too much of my time... left home at
5:30 this morning, got back at 10pm... no wonder I never have time to
play anymore!

I want to thank you all for trying to help. I would have replied
sooner but we've been having modem issues plus we took the kids on a
little vacation for summer.
I ended up doing a restore for my external HD was able to get them it
back on there. Then I re-installed the game on my main HD. It took a
few tries to get it fully installed but got it now. Now I am going to
copy the gamedata folders and other y'all suggested and hopefully that
will get me back to where I was! Keep your fingers crossed that it
goes well.
Thanks so much for your help, I have never gotten this much help on
other forums I've been on! (And yes, it is The Sims 1. We are more
into designing houses and making family memebers than actually doing
the goals, so we don't feel the need to upgrade just yet. Maybe by the
time we are there will be a Sims 3??)

Sounds hopeful anyway.

If you like designing houses, you'd love Sims2! Though I do remember it was
easy to make nice places with the original too.
