Hi all,
I am just after a few suggestions as to which mods I should use, any
tweaks to settings or any other help I can get to get the best out of
Morrowind. I have started new games several times after hearing
people always saying how good it is but inevitably get frustrated and
give up. The first time I tried it was maybe a year ago. I liked the
idea of the game just not the way it worked so I bought Oblivion and
loved it. For me, the biggest problems in Morrowind are as follows:
- Combat. Now I know it's probably just a skill level thing, but its
terrible trying to fight something pitiful like a mudcrab and getting
decimated all the while my sword is apparently going through the enemy
without actually hitting it! Also, waking up in the wilderness and
getting destroyed by an assassin is not fun.
- Slow pace. My favourite thing about these games is just running
around in the wilderness and exploring. However in Morrowind it feels
like I'm crawling around with two broken legs. Maybe I'm just spoiled
by my very athletic Oblivion character.
- Tiny text. There is a ton of text in this game, far more than
Oblivion but at the resolution I play at it is very hard to read. A
mod that increases text size would be great, if at all possible. Or
maybe even a mod that removes unnecessary text, can't think of
specific examples at present but the kind of stuff you see repeated
hundreds of time. Something to help with the eyestrain!
- The inventory interface. I don't know how you do it but I find the
Morrowind interface very clunky and not intuitive. The hot keys are
poorly implemented and half the time I don't know what I'm doing or
even what I'm trying to use. Again this suffers from the resolution
thing. The higher the resolution, the harder it is to see anything.
But I have to use a high resolution because of...
- Ugly, ugly graphics. Probably the biggest turn off for me was the
drab, boring and plain ugly graphics. Scenery was just so unappealing
and the characters looked awful. I was actually surprised that the
game wasn't a lot older going by the dated look of the graphics. Now
I'm no graphics whore, but for some reason I find this game almost
depressing because of the visuals.
Sorry if I come off as a bit of a whiner, but I know there is a great
game in here under all of these issues I have with it and I just want
to get down to enjoying it. Any and all suggestions will be greatly
appreciated.
Cheers,

Combat is a problem until you get some experience as a character. The
more you hit things the easier it is to get the next hit. The only
thing to do is to pick your fights when you can. As far as the
assassins the best trick is to go to sleep with your back to a wall or
cliff and only way to come at you. Once you kill the guy loot him for
the very good armor and either sell it or wear it yourself. There will
then be a journal entry for stopping the attacks, if you don't want to
keep killing and looting them.

Are you running everywhere or just walking? If running, the more you do
the better your running will get. Or you could get the Boots of
Blinding Speed as a quest item. Just be aware they have a disadvantage
to using them.

What graphics card are you using? Also do you have "shiny" water or
muddy? If the later and your card supports it, which it sounds like,
there is a check box to turn on the shiny affects. While the graphics
are not up to some games such as Dungeon Quest, they are better than
others such as NeverWinter Nights. They are also a great improvement
over the earlier Elder Scrolls games.

I am wearing the armour and have sold a couple of sets for a very tidy
profit. For now I am wandering around Vivec doing a bit of trading
and picking up quests before I get back in to combat.

I have been running and tonight I was bunny hopping around like its
Quake or something. Acrobatics levels up pretty fast this way, just
like Oblivion, and gets me around quicker. I guess it will do for
now... I might have a look for those boots too.

I think I already had that option on as the water does look fairly
good. Tonight was the first time I've played Morrowind on my 42" LCD
TV which now doubles as my PC monitor since my 19" CRT died and it
doesn't look horrible, still not great but its ok. Also the text is
easier to read but the inventory screen is still pretty small.

There are trainers located all around Morrowind that train you in whatever
you want to specialize in. The best tweak in the gam by far is the Luck
trick...if you are using the PC version you can simply do a text
command...but that is to easy. If you want a little more finesse with it,
you can do the following spell combo: Fortify Attribute(Luck on this one)has
to be on self,I suggest range 20-60) plus Soul trap target for 1 or more
seconds...the spell is very very cheap, and the more you raise you Luck up
to, the more it effects everything in the game...better cahance at dodging,
hitting, enchanting, etc.(EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING)

That soul trap trick spell also works with the attribute Speed(but I suggest
not raising your speed past 500...it will definitely crash your system)

Not sure about this one...

You can download plugins off the morrowind website, and the best one I have
found is the better face/bodies mod. There is also a better textures mod as
well...defnitely worth downloading and implementing as well is the better
tree mod...adds some chickens and bigger better trees in town....very cool!

My question to you: would you like some cheese with that whine?

The Dark Brotherhood from Tribunal I assume. There are defniitely mods
that prevent them from showing up so early.

This depends alot, I mean alot, on your Speed and Athletics. I'm always
shocked at how slow I move any time I start a new character after
playing a high level one. You could always just bump up your athletics
skill with the console, but other than that just to to be patient, it
does get better fairly soon. Encumbrance also effects your speed
significantly, so don't run around with excess junk if you can help it.

I dont' think there's alot you can do about this one, besides just
lowering the resolution. :/

This one surprises me. The interface can be a little annoying if you
have to transfer a very large number of items between containers but
other than that I always found it quite useable. You can change the
size of any of the windows and rearaneg them to suit yourself. I guess
the icons might be a little small at higher resolutions, but they're
just as big as Windows Desktop icons.

Funny that. To some extent the graphics are supposed to be ugly.
Morrowind is a harsh land, and the graphics protray that well. But I
can see where it would be unappealing, especially combined with moving
down in the technical spectrum.
I'm not sure why you think using a higher resolution will help though.
Personally I'd turn that down if it seesm to be causing other problems.
There are, as others have said lots and lots of retexture mods. As well
as some mods that actually replace certain models, often with MUCH more
detailed versions. Unfortunatly I can't really recomend any because the
standard graphics never bothered me.
The only two mods along those lines I normally play with are "Real
Signposts" and "Key Replacer". The former makes the roadsigns readable
and the latter greatly expands the variety of keys. (Previously only
two!)
Wait, that's not quite true, you also might like my own New Icons mod.
It makes the spell icons more representative. You can download that
one here:
