Need help with Rugrats Time Travellers game

My 6 year old son keeps bugging me because he can't figure out how to
get out of the first "mission" : 1800's goldmine. He can find Tommy,
but can't figure out what to do once he sees him(tommy is flashing in
the corner of the screen). I played it and can't figure it out either.
(Much to my chargrin!)


We got the game used without instructions, so there may be some
information we are missing in order to complete the game.

Any help would be appreciated.
