I'm currently working my way through the Muldoon Legacy -- I've been
referring to the walkthrough when I get stuck (which is often), but I
haven't done everything in the order suggested by the walkthrough.
Currently I'm talking to the General, who tells me that I need a
table, but I've no idea where to find one. I searched for "table" in
the walkthrough, but it didn't help. Can someone please tell me where
to get the table I need?

Also, the walkthrough told me that I was supposed to use the clock
glass to look at the <spoiler>, but when I try that -- no matter how I
word it -- I get the response "That hardly helps anything."

The table is in the aptly named Furniture Exhibit. If you've already
found the Botantical Room, you've found the Furniture Exhibit;
otherwise, you've still got a ways to go.

I'm pretty sure LOOK THROUGH CLOCK GLASS AT <noun> works. (Or possibly
LOOK AT <noun> THROUGH CLOCK GLASS -- I forget.)

Does that involve growing a plant? I know from the walkthrough that I
need to do that, but I haven't got around to it yet.

Okay, I tried LOOK THROUGH CLOCK GLASS AT <noun> and it worked.
However, LOOK AT <noun> THROUGH CLOCK GLASS (which is what the
walkthrough says) doesn't.

Thanks for your help!

Not directly, but until you've grown the plant you won't have what you
need to reach that part of the museum.

Unfortunately, there's a few of these guess-the-phrasing problems in an
otherwise solid and entertaining, albeit difficult, puzzle-fest. Pretty
impressive for what was, I think, one of Jon's first released games.

I finished Legacy a few weeks ago after about a month of
on-again-off-again effort. I'm working my way through Murders at the
moment.
