Hello all.. I've been "away" from my linux box for some time now and
had a sudden longing for nethack. So I download the windows version
for the laptop and play it in tty mode. And wouldn't you know, I get
my 2nd ever ascension about 6 games in. And wouldn't you know, while
copying the terminal (got up to creatures vanquished), I accidentally
hit close window. No points, no record. I'm guessing there's no way
of getting it back? Can someone out there at least make me feel better
and say they've done it too? >> Stay informed about: I hate windows |

Well, in my experience, on WinDOS there's regularily data lost.
You're feeling better now? :-}
But what I really suggest is to play on NAO and use your WinDOS box
just as a terminal; get a nice telnet client (PuTTY is great) and
have a look at http://alt.org/nethack for all features and details.
You'll enjoy.

That's not going far enough.
What he should do is install Cygwin or use a runs direct from
CD/DVD Linux distro like Knoppix on the windows box, then he'll
have a good terminal. He could also ssh into is his Linux box
and play with tiles with X11 forwarding.
He should also get a USB keyboard and plug it in. Much more
comfortable to play that way than on a cramped laptop keyboard.
But isn't there a Windows version that has the dumplog patch
pre-compiled in?

Nah, that's still not far enough. He should just install Linux instead
of Windows.

What an insolence!
Thank's for sharing your experience; I'll keep that statement in mind when
I'll choose a vendor to buy new hardware.

I just did a lot of looking around before I got my new laptop a few
months ago. I wanted a decent sound and video system, as well as
Linux/*BSD support; decent price is a plus.
I went with an MSI-1029. It's listed on several Linux-laptop web sites
as well as a FreeBSD site as working well with Open Source systems
(except the WinModem, but I can live with having to boot to Windows for
that). The base price is around $900, but fully loaded (2GHz Turion64
CPU, 2G RAM, 120G disk) and a spare power adapter it cost a tad less
that $2k.
You can get them with Linux pre-installed from some of the online
resellers, but those seem to all have pretty bad customer service
records (as well as seeming to be all the same company behind the
scenes; it's weird). I got mine from <http://www.rawpowerpc.com>; they
had really good ratings, and I had a very good experience with them.
I haven't had time to do more than install Windows and OpenBSD; since I
need to actually use it right now I haven't had time to set up the
X-Windows. I can report that the ethernet and wireless cards both work
fine in OpenBSD, though, and others have said that the video and sound
do as well.
Of course, it's ludicrously over-powered just for running NetHack, but
what the heck.

While I'd do that whenever I can it might turn out to be a problem
with laptops; how many laptop's are out there that are able to run
Linux? (Three [or so] years ago there was just one brand.) Laptops
seem to require exotic device drivers, AFAIR, and there is/was no
support from the manufacturers. Has that situation changed?

Short answer: Yes.
Slightly longer answer: We have five laptops in the house, all running
Kubuntu Linux; both of the two-year-old Dells and the Thinkpad without
any trouble at all, the ancient Dell and even older Gateway with some
minor adjustments. The newer versions of most distributions run on many
laptops out of the box.
Don't hope for support from the manufacturers, though; I was once told by
a Dell tech support critter, when I called it for a hardware problem,
that it was my own fault for not running Windows.
The Linux community, however, is a better bet. Some useful links:

I am currently using a laptop shipped by www.linuxcertified.org. The
stock installation doesn't quite have the best drivers for everything
(although it does work quite well), but over time I've been able to
figure out how to get stuff working, and now I don't have any complaints
about it.

That's a plus and good to know.
There's only one problem for me; I am not sure I ever use the suse
distro again, they had built such a trashy environment, a lot needed
manual fixing - horrible. (May be not so big an issue if you accept
the system as they provide it. <shudder>)

I feel comfortable with 'vi'. Keyboard mapping (qwerty/quertz) is
more of an issue; try moving NW with a qwertz keyboard.
Still didn't manage to kill a row of orcs using the 'dw' command.

I've a four-year-old Compaq Presario with 128Mb RAM happily running
Debian unstable. It's a pretty basic setup - all I use it for is web
browsing, some iPod management and a little coding (and nethack!). I
can't get the sound to quite work properly for internet things (but to
be fair I haven't really tried) and setting up the wireless network was
something of a pain, but it works perfectly now. Runs pretty quick, too
- the poor thing was really struggling with WinXP after a couple of
years.

Yay! Ever tried ":%s/H/:/g" or something? Sounds useful.

Quite so. I mean, not polymorph but genocide...
What I tried was the ":%s/L//g" genocide attempt.

Rather, all our suggestions do not work in vanilla NH, sadly. :-/

(Have not yet found the option setting to activate that feature.)
But if you fear about crippled maps use ":%s/L/./g" instead.
