Looking at my brothers PS3, and downloading a bit of online content,
one thing struck me.
Sony don't have a limit for down loadable content at all, so small
games pack in at over 100megs each, (90 is the smallest so far).
So far, of the 55gigs available on his hard drive, there is less than
43 available. Sure, that's plenty - but a 20 gig hard drive would just
have 3 gigs left for everything else! (that's 55 gigs after formatting
left for data).
3 movie trailers, 4 "Arcade' style games, and 5 demos (GT:HD, F1,
Motorstorm and Genji:days of the Blade, along with NBA 07)
On a 20 gig XBOX he has 18 arcade games and 13 demos. He has 3 gigs
free!
So WHY is it that the PS3 is so hard-drive hungry? Are the downloadable
demos and arcade games prettier?
No - look at Blast Factor - is that prettier than Geometry Wars? No.
Is Lemmings prettier than Wiki: Fable of Souls? No
Is GripShift prettier than Novadrome? Nope.
I had a look at the sizes - the demos on the PS3 aren't that muich
bigger than 360 demos, but the arcade titles are gargantuan!
Why are these games going well over 100 megs? Blast Factor is the
smallest, at 80 megs - which is a good 30 more than the maximum XBLA
title.
Game Saves don't hold the key, as these clock in at only a few hundred
KB each.
Move clips seem to be a little larger for Hi-definition, but they do
have the option of Full HD (1080) videos too that weigh in even
heftier.
So - I suppose the conclusion to this is that a 20gig PS3 does NOT hold
as much as a 20 gig XBOX 360. You really should get the 60 gig PS3 to
store anything like the same amount of stuff.
The reasons are plentiful:
PS3 requires a hard drive to stream data to - to speed up game load
times.
The PS3 installs hefty chunks of games to the hard drive in advance,
such as Ridge Racer 7 with it s 4 gigs of game data residing there (it
is optional though).
Game Demos are generally larger on the PS3.
Arcade titles are generally 2-3 times the size of 360 titles.
Why are titles clocking in larger than their 360 counterparts?
Compression.
It is widely known that Sony's system doesn't have the advanced
hardware texture compression that the 360 does, thus games like
Roboblitz can contain 800mb of texture data in 50mbs of code.
of course, even 20 gigs is not adequate if you intend to use Microsofts
Video download service (5-6 gigs for a bigger movie in HD, up to 1 gig
for a TV episode).
Also PS3 hard drives are upgradeable using standard 2.5" components.
But if you are considering a PS3, choose the 60 gig version.
Oh, whoops - that puts the price difference for anyone with a
non-wireless network up by $200 for the PS3
