I haven't checked the boards in almost six months, but I'm back and
lurking just in case more discussion pops up.
What I think happened was (yes) that everyone played through a
game-year, lost interest then probably had a lot of work to do in their
real lives because it got ignored while they were playing ac. That's
what happened to me, and until last week I hadn't played for nearly
four months.
I stopped playing because I deleted my first town (stupid, stupid)
because my roommate dominated the game when I first bought it - it was
golden statue envy that drove me to it but my (real life) neighbors
inherited most of my critters. (tip: if you delete a town, make sure
you have another town in the other memory slot for the refugees!) Nook
really irks me, so when I had to run all his errands again I tried to
avoid them... then stopped playing altogether. About then I realized
that I had a lot of rl stuff to take care of...
I started playing again primarily because some close friends of mine
started playing again - and whenever we come to another's house for
dinner one of us brings a town and terrorizes the other's. I suppose
this game could be played indefinitely if you have enough friends to
appreciate it as well.
The game does a good job of encouraging real life socialization, and
that's a lot of the charm: I can invite a friend over for dinner, let
them run wild through my town (only takes about fifteen minutes), and
oh, as long as you're here let's go see a play or something. The game
is great on so many levels. Long after a friend visits my town and
hasn't been seen again, animals may start asking what he or she is up
to - and I might have to call them myself to find out. If you visit a
friend's town and your favorite animal (Punchy, of course) moves into
it while you're there, you'll be obligated to visit that town again,
just to keep in touch... and incidentally, you're keeping in touch with
that rl friend as well.
Or maybe this game has become an on-again off-again obsession and I'm
getting more out of it than the developers intended. If that's the
case, it was totally worth the $34.50 price of ownership.
Anyway, I'm lurking again and will post rants as dictated by my
spontaneous nature.
