I've been away from this group (and the others of the r.g.t-c.m family)
for a long time but I recall that these were very active groups several
years ago. Now they seem nearly deserted. Did people move to a
different forum or did they just gradually leave or what?

Newsgroups are not use as much as they use to be. They are not known
among the new internet user and not as well supported by internet
provider. I used to receive post from David Delaney here and now I
don't, and that is probably true for a lot of other user/poster. There
is also that Wizard has a message board and there also other site where
you can interact. You can try using google groups
(http://groups-beta.google.com/).

That may partly be because I don't post here much at all these days. Though
I have heard from a few other people that my posts stopped being visible
to them - but many can still see them fine.

Google picks up my posts fine, as well, if that is one of your worries...

But yes, Usenet's activity as a whole is a small fraction of what it was five
or ten years ago. A +lot+ of the activity has moved to various webforums...
but of course the problem there is that you can't crosspost from one webforum
to another AND have to know there's an appropriate forum, find it, register
on that forum (because registering on any other forum isn't recognized), and
go there every time you want to read or post. There's no central webforum
venue for all webforums (no matter how many "web portal" sites come into
existence that try to gather all such links in a given area...). But be
that as it may, a lot of the newer traffic is now happily playing out on
the Web, not here...

I'd suggest a few reasons:
1. Forums on websites see quite a bit of use now.
2. Less people seem to have even heard what a newsgroup is.
3. IRC channels for Magic are available.
4. People can find RL people to answer questions for them.

I would also suggest this is the reason for .rules getting less traffic as
well.

One think I thought would work well with Possessed Portal is Tomorrow,
Azami's Familiar: it replaces draw (as does Possessed Portal) and you,
as the affected player, decide which effect to apply first. Besides,
Tomorrow helps you dig for whatever you need quicker. Just an idea...

In addition to what's already been mentioned, all the discussion on
tournament-level strategy seems to have gone to one or two popular
sites that are really targeted at that audience. We mainly do casual
decks here these days.

Speaking of which, I'm about half-way through building various decks
involving Possessed Portal. Early indications are that trying to use
it in an obvious way, like with Verdant Force or Shrieking Drake /
Genesis Chamber, gets you very killed very quickly...

Agreed. Although "a few posts a day" does add up to a few dozen a week...

Yup, picked up some extra Tomorrow today. I'm also finding my Phyrexian
Grimoire rather useful. Proper decklist after a bit more testing and
tweaking with this idea, and then I've got one more go up my sleeve too.

along these lines, there was a good article yesterday (Andrew Sullivan, I
think) had an article using Possessed Portal. Looks like a great card, but I
don't have any so have not had the chance to try to make a deck around it.

good luck,
K

Might be that less people are taking up writing for the newsgroup Sad
Jamie used to write here....
