I've found a new product that has allowed me to start playing fast paced First Person Shooters again! Other controllers have been great, but since I lost the use of my right hand, I've been hard pressed to find anything that could compete with the accuracy and speed of the basic WASD+mouse combo. A joystick is nice, but when playing a PC game that is optimized for the speed of a mouse, I was never able to play well.
All that changed when I found the Sandio Game O2 mouse. Its got 3 joystick-like hat switches that give it essentially 16 programmable buttons. The hat switches make it fairly easy to navigate a game with one hand, cause you can use them in a directional manner. The mouse was somewhat designed to help 3d professionals navigate better in 3d apps, but it works phenominally well in games too. The only problem I've found is that both versions of the mouse that Sandio sells are ergonomically right handed. I contacted the company about which would work better for someone with only one hand and they recommended their newer mouse (the o2). I've been using it for a little while now, and I've been playing Half Life 2 and Team Fortress 2 and I'm able to keep pace with the 2 handed gamers! It does require a bit of practice to get used to, but I'd imagine that someone with their right hand would get even more out of it. I'm just glad to finally be able to play my favorite games again, and not feel handicapped in my virtual worlds too!!
The company is http://www.sandio.com
They are a one product firm, but I've found their product to feel sturdy and comfortable. The mouse isn't cheap, running at $79.99, but for the functionality, nothing beats it.
If you only have one hand and want to play fast paced FPS games again, the Sandio mouse is the best product available (that I've found). I urge you to contact the company and offer your support of their effort, and maybe they'll work to make a more universal and even better mouse in the future. I love mine, but I do wish it was left handed, or at least ambidexterous. Hopefully their next model will be!
