i play mame on my windows me or 98 with no problem.

i just tried it on xp home,.....the screen graphics(in this case,
tetris) is blurry and out of proportion. i am using the same
mame0.66,,,same screen resolution, 360x240 i think, both computers
share the same monitor. essentially, everything is the same for both me
and xp.

can anyone tell me what the prob might be? thanks

The blurryness is caused by your gfxcard which turns on bilinear
filtering by default. Use MAME's effect settings to get a sharp display.

The out-of-propotion is most likely be caused by a not adjusted monitor.
Modern monitors save theirs settings for each resolution. Sometimes they
don't or they do but only for the common ones.

MAME .66 is way outdated and shouldn't be used anyway.

Why shouldnt it be used? Please explain!
If mame .66 plays all the roms you like properly why update to a newer
version of mame?

As mentioned before, play with the directdraw and/or direct3d 'Effect'
settings in MAME.

MAME .66 is 3 years old, emulation of nearly every core has highly
improved in the last 3 years. Not to mention countless fixes to games
formerly listed in the bug database of MAMETesters and of course not to
mention wonderful new drivers to formerly not emulated systems.

It's also slowed down dramatically, using .66 or thereabouts I used to
be able to emulate Asteroids on a P3 450, now it won't even run on a
P4 1.6 GHz. If someone can't change their hardware immediately then
that can be a good reason for sticking to a particular release.

Of course fundamentalism says "no it's not", but reality says "yes it is".

Mostly depends on whether you think samples are good enough. Taste
varies. Definitively not an identical result though.

Mame has slowed down for older games in order to make the newer games
faster and still keep the whole maintainable, but not by that much.

I'd figured it was something like that, is there any way for and
end-user to switch it back to samples without downgrading mame?

Either way, it's still the best gaming[1] platform around!

[1] yes emulation, I know I know Wink

Nope. Not even for me. Sample support for asteroids is gone,
discrete emulation is a replacement.

absolutely not! You should only upgrade to more recent versions if there
are legitimate reasons to (i.e a game you regularly play is not emulated in
a previous version or has bugs in a previous version). As has been
mentioned, MAME slows down the more releases it has, games take longer to
start, etc.

Matter of fact, I think a lot of enthusiasts recommend version .56 (can't
remember the exact version) as it plays almost all of the older games arcade
perfect and has good performance.

Nonsense. Old versions were compressed with UPX and they take longer to
start (besides the memory usage) due to decompression.
Newer versions do have additional verification checks, yes, but in a
non-debug build they aren't enabled by default. The so-called slowdowns
for old emulated machines are very very small and it's usually caused by
an emulation improvement. People usually want more accurate emulation,
besides on systems manufactured in the last 3 years you won't feel any
difference in speed for the same titles. If you got an ancient
PC....well..tough luck...get a new one...they're cheap.
