We have exactly as much traffic now as alt.games.whitewolf.mage had this
time last year, spam and normal postings included.

Say a prayer for alt.games.whitewolf, for it has passed from the mortal
world. Now we see through a glass darkly /et cetera/.

At least there's RPG.net.

I mourn.

Been a pleasure, it has. I met some good people here.

And I am there, as soon as they get proper threading and read/unread
flags on their messages.

Honestly, I play on the WhiteWolf moderated chats, and I only keep a
regular eye on the Mage forum there...

The main problem is that WW isn't releasing splatbooks and novels at
the helter-skelter rate that it used to, so there's much less to
discuss on a regular basis, coupled with the disassociation from the
old storylines that has knocked so many of the legacy fans away from
the games...

Really, were you expecting anything different?

It is rather sad. I have a lot of nostaligia for this group, as I cut
my Internet gaming discussion teeth here. It's saddened me to come
back now again only to see it slowly die. I contributed by not posting
here much lately, I guess, but it didn't help when most of my recent
posts were overlooked. Of course, I've overlooked plenty of posts by
not being here, so I can't legitimately gripe there.

*Salutes the newsgroup as it sinks beneath the waves.*

I blame WW for not releasing the Mage line sooner.

Bollocks. This group's traffic has been on the decline for years.

Newsgroups as a whole have been declining since cheap and easy to use
forum software became widely avalible... now, it's mostly for all the
"w4R3z" and "pr0n" file transfers.

As to ending the oWoD, seriously, how can you be upset about it? All
the supernatural types were convinced from the start that the end was
comming (Apocalpse, Gehenna, Ascension, The Long Winter, ect), and
SOON, so it would be a huge cop out if they just kept milking the
splatbooks through 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th... edition. The game was
DESIGNED to end. Those who complain about it just seem to be whining
that someone else ruined their fun... but why? You can still play
using any or all of the material that you like. It just isn't getting
any new sourcebooks.

I like what they've done with the nWoD. Yes, it's lacking an overall
metaplot, but that just gives individual groups more space to
manipulate the world without bumping into this or that particular Elder
or Antedeluvian that happens to have their fingers into everything.
The system is cleaned up a lot now, and all the supernaturals can
interrelate stats easily, so crossover isn't such the nightmare it was
before... Overall, it's nifty.

I guess for me, it's just that I put in a lot of time and effort the
WoD. And then BAM! No more. And there wasn't any real closure when
WW refused to publish the revised version of the Technocracy (after
printing only ItX), IMO.

But worse, it has taken them nearly forever to come out with a new Mage
book. And now...I'm not sure if I want to go out of my way to acquire
that book.

Bottom line, it's an emotional thing. It's like anything. You put
your time and effort into something as a fan, and then things change.
Can't look back, can't remain, can't move forward. So, you simply move
on. Summer's End. End of line. Mission accomplish, and all that.

And maybe that's the point of Mage.

The things we treasure the most is a fleeting thing, and as human
being, in order to truly live, we have to move on. Otherwise, we
become bound by the very things that was once dear to us.

Dead magic.

In end, I'll check out the new "World of Darkness". It's definitely
new territory. But, as they say, you can't go home again.

My advice: Just kick back and enjoy the wabi sabi.

Yes. Please do so! It might be the first nWoD "splat" I buy-- not that
I don't like the nWoD, I just don't own anything beyond the corebook,
because I already *have* a vampire game, a werewolf game, a magician
game, et cetera. But I don't have a Frankenstein game!

Oh, no, I did not mean to imply that I have any particular stake in the
oWoD. Just that the likelihood of actually playing a vampire or werewolf
game in the near future is fairly low. Not that I don't like 'em, but
right now the games I am most likely to play are probably /Exalted/,
/Shadowrun/, or /Orpheus/. And I likely will move soon, so even those
are on the horizon for the moment.

I hope for a new /Mummy/ game, because that was always one of my favorites.
