You'll probably get alot of standard responses to this topic (i.e Mario,
Zelda etc) so I'll try and point you in the direction of some of the more
overlooked N64 greats. So here they are in no particular order.
1. Rocket: Robot on Wheels
A massively overlooked platformer with a unique cental character and
physics. Hugely inventive (a build your own rollercoster in the first
level, anyone) and a diverse set of levels puts it easily up there with the
greats.
Unfortunately overlooked due to the publisher Ubisoft releasing quite a few
substandard games at the time (my how things have changed) and people
subsequently giving it a wide birth.
2. Space Station: Silicon Valley
Another platformer but blended with some truly well designed puzzles.
This game involves you crashlanding on the aforementioned Station to find it
populated by a diverse set of robot animals which you can posess and use to
solve the games many puzzles.
Think lemmings in 3D that actually works and is a whole lot more fun. A
great title form a then unknown company called DMA design who you may
realise went on to do rather well for themselves.
3. Body Harvest.
Okay there's no getting away from it. This game looks terrible. In fact
you'll strugle to find a worse looking N64 game.
Gameplay wise though its something of a stormer and a possible precurser to
the 3D GTA games again from the boys at DMA.
It's a futuristic shoot-em up with a "B-Movie" feel that sees you using a
variety of vehicles to gun down and detroy the invading insect aliens before
they complete there "Body Harvest".
Sounds cliche and quite possibly is but but that doesn't get in the way of
it being terrific fun.
Unfrtunately sold like a dog and will never see a remake despite the fact it
would have been so much better on a machine that could actually handle its
ambition.
4. Jet Force Gemini:
Another game that was overlooked despite being probably Rare's most original
and absorbing title outside of Goldeneye.
One of the most visually stunning N64 titles by far, each level really did
look different and some of the alien worlds simply blew you away.
The innovative use of 3 different characters added depth and the size and
scale of the adventure was up there with some of the N64's biggest titles.
Essentially a 3rd person shooter: this discription is to do the game a
severe injustice.
A very unique one off (even if Rare did steal all the main characters and
the main enemy directly from a childrens book- the plagiarising bastards).
5. Mischief Makers
At the time I could never figure out whether I loved Treasure's little known
gem or hated it. Looking back I realise it was definately the latter.
A 2d platformer with a 3d look Mischief Makers (renamed from the far better
soundung Japanese version: Go Go Troublemakers) was quite possibly one of
the maddest things ever released for the 64.
If riding around on a giant wasp and fighting a giant mech gorrilla while
assuming the identity of a robotic french maid in order to save a bunch of
creatures who closely resemble an Edvard Munch painting is your thing then
go for it.
And if it isn't your thing...WHY NOT!
