Post subject: New graphics card - what a thrill! And a few questions.
Archived from groups: alt>games>microsoft>flight-sim (more info?)

Just wanted to share my brand new experience - flying! Not jumping through
the air, but actually flying!

I had no separate graphics card - just the on-board with shared memory.
Finally I decided to install a graphics card with 128 MB memory. What a
thrill! Should have done that ages ago.

Now I am flying through the air with 26 fps (locked at 26 fps) instead of
8-10 fps! By the way - what is the purpose of locking the fps? And what
should it be locked at?

Approaching a busy airport like EKCH (anyway, busy with all my AI planes) is
slightly more realistic than with 3-5 fps - and much easier, since the plane
now responds to my corrections in real-time. I can highly recommend
investing in a decent graphics card - makes flying so much more fun!

I experimented with the APP button in autopilot mode. Am I right in assuming
that clicking the APP button, the flight computer will take over the
approach once the ILS is "captured"? So during descent you click APP while
the HDG and other autopilot settings are still on, and when the ILS is
captured (if you tuned to the right frequency!), the computer will try to
make the plane follow the glide-slope, both heading and descent rate? But
what about IAS? (I crashed the landing gear of my MD-80 when landing, and
earned a big bill from the airline - due to a landing speed of 200 mph!).
That didn't work!

Best wishes
Drus

It limits the frame rate to the value you specify. Thus allowing the
CPU to spend any time otherwise spent on pushing the frame rate higher
on other tasks like loading the next mesh or calculating AI acft
positions.

> And what should it be locked at?
Whatever you feel comfortable at.
Many of us feel that anything over 20 (some go as low as 15) is just
wasted and the difference can't really be noticed by the average
player. But many disagree and there have been tons of posts on this
subject, both pro and con Wink
The average TV in Europe refreshes at 25fps. In the US it's 30 or 1/2
the powerline frequency.

So far you haven't mentioned which card you got.
One concern for many is: how noisy is it? Many high powered cards have
fans on them that really make a racket.

just because a tv refreshes at 25fps or whatever doesnt mean thats all we
can see

hell, new tvs are 60-100fps these days.......

Actually.. it was an upgraded vid-board from Dell.. to the Viper 770D
from the base-card. The system shipped in May 1999 with twin 9GB
Cheetahs, one PIII Xeon 500MHz, and 256MB of ECC RAM.

Have since added another 256MB ECC stick and a second Xeon
processor (dual processor MB) from Dell.. that was $1000. Don't recall
the price of the RAM.. but in 1995 I paid $1000 for 64MB of RAM
(bumping it up to 80MB) to run WinNT 3.51 when everyone elses' Win3.1
was locking up every 20 mins. That box was a Gateway P5-120 with SCSI
/ IDE, an NT workstation!! Today it has a 180MB Intel P5 and meets
the specs to run Win2k Pro (and packin two 40GB WD drives.)

Those are my TWO and only dinosaurs.. { grin }

Your problem there Gregory was that your CPU was not able to feed the
Geforce 3 at a sufficiently high rate. I had the same problem a few years
back before I upgraded my m/board and CPU. I was so disappointed that I went
back to the shop and they let me swap for a Geforce 2 which was still a
better card than I had before and they refunded the surplus money. The
difference in frame rate was amazing. Smile)

Yeah.. thanks for putting it in plain language. Its what stopped me
from migrating to FS9. An email came in about the GeForce2 and
things may be looking up. Am not ready to retire the ol' workhorse
just yet! Smile

Sorry for not mentioning the type of card - I was so thrilled with the
effect, that I thought of nothing else.

It is a GeForce A6600 GT with 128 MB RAM. I don't know the difference
between all these fancy names - I just thought that 128 MB on the card
instead of stealing from my "normal" RAM would improve things - and it did.

It does have a fan on it - but I cannot hear it at all. I guess it is
because the fan on the PS is so noisy - so it added no additional noise.

I certainly didn't want to stir up an old discussion - just a brief
explanation of the significance of the fps-lock. I got that. Thank you!

Thats a good card and despite getting on a bit with age has sustained the
test of time. Your right about all the fancy names and confusion with the
vast amount of cards on the market. I once made the mistake of getting an
Nvidia FX5200 graphics card thinking it was great because it had 128mb (more
meant better to me). I admit it was better than the 32Mb card that came
with my pc but still lagged behind others on the market at the time. It has
been replaced twice since, first to a 9800 pro then to the new Nvidia 7800GS
256 Mb 16 pipeline Overclocked APG model. I dont know much about gpus but
the core and memory speeds have a major impact on performance as well as the
amount of pipelines
