What's the least powerful range of graphics cards that can handle Ob
at max res? (This'll avoid me spending too much on something I don't
need, namely Vista/DX10.)

Thanks, regards, Robert

Sorry, I didn't realise. To answer your question, I simply don't
know. What framerate would be considered "nice + smooth"? 30? 60?
Sorry, I just haven't got a clue. Something that looks very good.
Perhaps I ought to go for a x1950Pro? Maybe a GeForce 8 series card
will be ok?

I have recommended the X1950PRO in the other thread, but on the issue
of framerates, I'd guess most people would consider above 30
acceptable. Maybe not, my standards might be lower, but I have a vague
recollection of a factoid that most TV and film runs at 25(? 30?) so
games don't really need to be faster.

It's not only max res you want to get up to your target framerate
though, it's all the FSAA and other niceties. Running at 60fps without
max FSAA is probably less pleasant to look at than half the framerate
with the best FSAA. I'm no expert at all at all this eye candy stuff,
so someone else will have to clarify what I'm on about here. I just
know that high res and high framerates are not the be-all and end-all
of graphics performance.

It obviously depends on the rest of your hardware, but in general a
X1950Pro or perhaps XT, or a 7900GT/8600GT.

I think you need to specify what framerate you find acceptable before
anyone can answer that. Technically a 6600 is capable of max
resolution in Oblivion, but nobody would ever consider it playable.
Personally I have a x1950 Pro, and I'm very happy with its

It's very much a matter of taste, and varies from person to person. I
can't really play with anything below 50fps, but I know people who are
quite happy with 25fps, which is why I asked your preference.

I would expect either of those to be OK, but I can't say from personal
experience. I play Oblivion at 1024x768 - nowhere near maximum
resolution - because I'm one of the people who wants as high a
framerate as possible.

TV and movies works at 25 fps because they use motion blur. If you
freeze a movie during a scene with movement you can quite clearly see
that it's blurry. Games on the other hand don't use motion blur. Each
frame is sharp, so generally anything below 30 fps looks jerky and not
fluid.
