It's not very often that I get p""sed off. (But then again, if you ask
my wife I am always ranting on about something or other that is going
wrong with the world or not exectly to my liking).
But today is one of those days...I have made the monumental decision
to wipe off my installation of FS9 and commence the arduous task of
reinstalling it.
Basically It has been playing up of late the main problem being that
whilst flying out of Scotland I get a weird "out of memory" error and
the only way out is to offer to send Mr. Microsoft a message in the
vain hope that he will return the compliment and make it all good
again (not)
I asked for help on this NG and as usual got loads of good answers as
to where the problem may lie but to no avail. Everything I tried
failed.
Now some people could live with the fact that there is a tiny quirk in
the system that prevents them flying out of Edinburgh or Glasgow but
not me..(Must be the perfectionist) but of late other strange things
have started happening too.
The latest is that I set up a flight and the scenery seems to load
really fast then I am faced with the scenario where I am not on the
runway at Glasgow but accelerating in the climb with weird
haluciagenic graphics !!
Anyway, the main point of this (unusual) rant on my behalf is the
absolute "b*ll ache" of reinstalling FS9 then putting all of the add-
ons back as they were, all working in total harmony with each other.
These range from add-on aircraft, individual mesh files, Navigator,
weather programs, loads of add on scenery, utilities...the list seems
endless....
Needless to say I have resigned myself to the fact that all the
evenings next week are going to be taken up by honing my FS9 back to
the well oiled piece of machinery it used to be.
I only wished that after each consecutive add-on I installed I somehow
could make a snapshot of my system (Apart from System Restore) to
rectify any problems that are bound to ensue in the coming months...
(Perhaps there is such a genie lurking out there???)....
Anyway, sorry for the rant but I now feel considerably better and
satisfied in the fact that I know that there are several thousand
souls out there (hopefully) feeling sorry for me....

Regards as always,

Pete (Stafford, UK)

I am one of the thousands of souls who feels sorry for you, Pete.
Now, I'm going to bed (still feeling sorry, of course) : )

Don't worry, be happy! I picked that up in Dominica from a street
person who was lusting after my wallet. I think it's good advice.

When you've finished Pete and it works OK, get yourself an external drive
and some image software!
Saved my butt a few times particularly when an add-on messed things up.

Yes I feel sorry for you Pete, it's irritating. One thing you could do
(although it may be too late!), is to back up your Add-on scenery folder.
Then after re-installation you can replace the default with it. You still
have to go into the scenery library and reactivate each scenery but it does
save you from the b***saching task of finding and re-installing the scenery.
I have quite a lot of add-on scenery and I find this useful. There may be
one or two payware sceneries for which this might not work as a few make
registry entries but it reduces the workload. Smile

This is why after my last OS reinstall I did NOT reinstall FS9 but
bought FSX. I had 50 GB of data in FS9 and if all the add-ons were
simple installer exes it would be simple but loads of my scenery and
aircrafts had to be manually added. Put this file here, move this
folder there. Activate this layer in scenery manager, change this
priority etc etc. It became a 3 day pain in the arse.

I eventually did what a lot of ppl recommend and periodically ran a
backup of the FS9 folder and a lot of the addon folders which sat
outside of Microsofts parent folder. Backed up the config file too.
On the last reinstall most of the sim worked fine but I had to
reinstall a couple of payware addons like Ground Environment Pro and
PMDG
